Adding color to BW photo

Post by Lisa73 »

Good morning,

I have been trying to figure out how to take some pictures I have...turn them to black and white (which I know how to do that part now) but I want to color certain things, like a pedal on a flower or change a color of a shirt. I was able to do that on my older version of this software a couple years ago but for some reason I am totally lost ind finding out how to do this successfully.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!! Have a great Sunday!

Lisa

Its amazing how many of these video tutorials photoshop ones try to answer a simple question and then bring in so many other features to as it were show off the program.
This video was an example. It brings in termns like smart selection tool (Only started in X6), other selection tools (vague), vignette, Photo Effects, Black ana white Filter, Instant Effects palette, Blende Mode, Soft Light, duplicate , rename layers, and as well uses about 5 layers - all for something that is rather simple.

Hi Lisa 73. You should always mention what version of Paintshop pro you are using as changes in tools and the way they have been applied have varied over the many versions of PSP. Also a good idea to mention how experienced you are so the answer can be adjusted to suit your knowlege. You mention older version of the software and that you know how to convert to black and white.

Keeping it simple
1 Load your image and duplicate the layer (Right click the layer and select Duplicate

2. Convert the top layer to black and white (Note that Image > Greyscale converts all your layers to black and white which you do not want. You can use:
a) Adjust > Hue Saturation > Hue Saturation Lightness and tick the Colorise Box
b) Adjust > Color > Channel Mixer and tick the Monochrome box
c) Effects > Photo Effects > Black and White Film
d) Effects > Plugins > Nik Software > Color Efex Pro > BW Conversion
and there are probably a few other ways as well.

3. Now use an eraser on that black and white to make holes in that layer so you can see the color beneath where you want the color to show. If you make a mistake right click and unerase (this is a brilliant feature of PSP - using left click drags and right click drags to erase / unerase).

Of course you can make it easier by using the colour image to make a selection using the magic wand , or if you have it the smart selection brush, or any other ways of making an accurate selection. That selection will show through to the black and white layers so you can then erase quickly there.

You also mentioned changing tjhe color of a shirt which is another procedure altogether and not just spot coloring. This can be done with Color Replacer tool or Change to Target Tool.

Thank you both for your responses.

My apologies for not being more specific on the software version I'm using. I'm still getting my feet wet with the forum.
Just for the record, I know it's too late now, but I'm using Corel PaintShop Pro X6. I used to have PaintShop Pro x4 Ultimate, which is where I started learning more of the in-depth changes but I'm still very much an amatuer...even more so with this newest software (I've only had it since May).

I appreciate your patience ~
