Can you use blend modes within a Layer Group?

Post by Oatmeal »

I'm trying to keep a PSP X6 file organized and grouping some layers using a Layer Group. As soon as I do that with a vector layer and a raster layer that are using a blend mode it breaks.

(original is on the left, Layer Group on the right)
Is this by design or a bug? Is there a way around it while still using Layer Groups?

Can we see a picture of the layers palette?

Are both layers still setup with blend modes? As in the blend mode didn't revert to "Normal" did it?

Also, just to be sure, blend modes only work on layers inside the same group. So if the 18 is outside of the group that the ribbon is in you won't see the blend mode work anymore.

Image

The 'Name and Number Breast Cancer Logo' raster layer has a Blend mode of 'Darken'

The 'Name and Number' vector layer, that contains ROUBOS and 18, has its Blend mode settings at 'Normal'

I select the 'Name and Number Breast Cancer Logo' raster layer and the 'Name and Number' vector layer, then I select 'New Layer Group' from the toolbar in the bottom right of PSP X6. That is when I see the form that shows the image I showed previously. I only used the default settings on that form (Group is linked, Blend mode 'Normal')

Image

This happens regardless of how I create the Layer Group; by selecting the raster layer first (breaks it immediately) or by selecting the vector layer first (works until you drag the raster layer into the Layer Group.)

Image

After I create the Layer Group the Blend Modes are preserved but the resulting image is not the same.

Drag the background layer into the group.

"Darken" blend mode uses the darkest color of the layers. When the background is in play black is the darkest color and it overlaps the ribbon. When you groups the ribbon and the text, the text is white and only white. Meaning that the ribbon, pink, is darker than the text. And since the blend mode only works on layers inside the same group there is no blending going on.

So nothing has broken, what you're seeing is exactly what you're supposed to see.

So let me offer you a few options.

1) Create a mask based on the shape of the text
a) Select Vector object
b) selections -> From vector object
c) select ribbon
d) Layers - New Layer - Mask - show selection

That will have the same effect as "Darken" did and effectively remove the parts of the ribbon that are not contained inside the text area.

2) Add the background to the group

3) Make sure the text includes black areas. Or at least that there is a third layer behind the text that includes black

or

4) Ungroup the layers and use layer link sets. Link sets link layers together without the grouping functionality. This means layers can be anywhere in the image and still linked. When using the "Move" tool on linked layers they move together.

By default layers inside of a group are linked together and become unlinked when removed from the group.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to sort that out. I just created a black background layer and included that in the grouping and the problem was solved.

I have never used link sets or masks before so my knowledge on them is very weak.
