MFDC 4 Crashes with runtime error (Visual C++)

Post by JoReneA »

I am unable to burn my DVD project with my new MF4 due to crashes of the program when it reaches 15% of converting the video menu items. It takes FOREVER to get to the 15% conversion point and I have had different types of crashes. Once the program just disappeared with no error message. The next time I got the usual, "this program must close due to an error" message with the recommendation to send the info to Microsoft. The last time I had a Microsoft Visual C++ error message..."Runtime error, abnormal program termination." What can I do to get this project burned? I'm using avi files I captured from my video camera and then edited in MF, adding some text and also deleting some bad sections of the tape. I also changed the compression to 5750 to enable the entire 1 1/2 hours to fit on one DVD. I'm using MPG audio, as I think it used less space than Dolby. Any suggestions? The program is pretty worthless if I can't burn a DVD.

Thank you.

properties of the AVI file? codec, frame size, etc.....

use dolby instead. it offers more compatibility with DVD players and the file size requirement is virtually the same with MPEG.... unless you are in a PAL system..... but dolby is still recommended.

Avi file was regular avi 720x480 and when I chose dolby, the file size was too large for one disk. I don't know what is causing the crashes, but it could be the editing done on the file. I think I was converting to 5000.

The last time I tried it crashed again without any message...just disappeared from the screen at about 15% converted.

The program definitely has its problems.

To get around the problems maybe if you use the icons on the left side
of the screen and export the project to a dvd compliant mpeg2 first will work.
I usually create a template first, then apply the template.

Then load the compliant mpg2 file into a new project, create chapters, menus
and burn.
Also maybe lowering the datarate (bitrate) of the dolby setting from 256 to 192
will correct the disk space. Dolby is more compatible with NTSC players.

I also have had the project suddenly terminate like your project.
The workaround posted above worked for me.
(Always remember to save the project)

Hope this helps,

MD

exporting the movie could also do the trick. the rendering engine (from avi, mpg to VOB) in the last step is a bit sensitive to the type files its rendering from.

the export movie function has a more stable engine from what i believe. i think mf4 borrowed it from vs..... export movie was first implemented in DMF3.5

Thank you, MD, for the suggetion. It did work and I was finally able to get the project burned. I don't know why the program will export the files, converting them in the process, with no errors, but crashes every time when doing it as part of the final burning, but it did seem to be more stable when exporting. The quality turned out great, using 6000 kbps rate and the Dolby at 192 and I was able to fit about 1 1/2 hour on one DVD. I was even able to add some text to a few of the converted files before adding the menus. The initial export process, however, took a very long time...I would say most of an afternoon. The final burning of the DVD, however, went much more quickly since most of the files didn't need any more converting.
