X6 Pro started crashing. Tells 2 send in dump file. Where 2?
I did a few projects on X6. It would crash once in a while, but it was tolerable. Now it starts crashing when I pick a clip and try to play it. X6 had no trouble playing the clip before. Other programs play the clip just fine. It can still play some clips, but crashes on others. X6 says "The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis."
I tried and was unable to locate a page where I could submit the file to. Can anyone please point to how I can get this fixed? This piece of software has become unusable.
Thanks,
Vlad.

Hi Vlad and welcome to the forum.
The dump files can only be uploaded when requested by Tech Support, they will provide an upload location for you. Other than that the dump files are meaningless to anyone else.
As you are using VSX6, the warranty period has expired and they only way you can get support is by paying for it.
Forum members will try to help you if you can provide more information on the clips that are causing issues for you, right click on a clip in the timeline, select "Properties" then copy and attach to your next post

Re: X6 Pro started crashing. Tells 2 send in dump file. Wher
Hi, Robert.
I was able to determine that X6 crashed whenever I am trying to play MP4 clips imported from Android phone (Google Nexus 4). Attached is the properties of one such file. I tried several of the same type of clips - same result, X6 dies. Most of other files in the project are .MOV shot by Canon camera. X6 can deal with those.
I will be thankful for a solution, or a work-around. I tried to convert the file using VLC, but new file either has garbled sound, or VLC crashes trying to convert it. Curiously, VLC has no problem playing these files.
Thank you,
Vlad.

Re: X6 Pro started crashing. Tells 2 send in dump file. Wher
The only work-around was to convert these Android MP4s into WMV, using X6 itself. As long as I didn't try to play the clip, putting it on the timeline and rendering it worked. Trying to convert it to other formats, or MP4 with different settings resulted in generating files that would cause X6 to fail when playback is attempted. It's quite annoying..

Hi
Try renaming the file to use Mov rather than MP4 as the files extension?
The program has a batch convert option, there you can add all files and convert in one go, manually setting a suitable template.
Did you try converting to same type--Mp4

Hi, lata.
Renaming .mp4 to .mov has changed one error for another - what a quality product! Now I can play the clip without X6 dropping dead, but it can play the clip only from the very beginning. If I pause the clip and then resume, it shows white screen and restarts playing the clip from the beginning - with white screen video, while sound is OK.
So for now converting to the gigantic .WMV file presents least amount of grief - only tons of HDD space wasted.
I've been using Ulead products on and off for more than a decade, and this is lowest quality product, even though I was not particularly spoiled by their earlier products.
Thank you,
Vlad.

Hi Vlad,
First of all, don't rubbish the product, that will get you nowhere, VSX6/7 are very stable products and good value for money.
Most users have no issues with .MOV or MP4 video, they play and can be edited correctly. Whilst I do not have a definitive answer for your issue, it could be that your computer specs DO NOT meet the minimum requirements as specified by Corel, minimum Intel i5, and as .MOV and MP4 are HD, this could be the problem.

Unfortunately there are lots of versions, variations of MP4.
Camera manufacturers bring out new every day, tweaking the codecs to suit there product.
This leaves the video editors playing catchup
Your properties show as using 30.33 fps, a little odd, certainly not standard, saying that if VS is struggling playing these it may not be reading the properties correctly. Maybe “MediaInfo” will give more accurate readings.
Many will advise to convert there videos to a more editable format.
I guess that where you are now. Try asking the question to Google Nexus 4 to see what programs they would recommend to edit their videos…..
You can also ask the question on Corels facebook, there the site is staffed by Corel employees who may pass you on to Corel Support.
Search Corels Knowledge Base for associated problems, I know there was a quickfix for some Mov types, maybe that will affect MP4
Quicktime is required, can you check that you are running the latest version.

The Nexus 4 mp4's might be variable frame rate type and not constant (can be confirmed with MEDIA INFO)
I know this culprit is causing havoc in premier also.

Thanks, lata and asik1!
I have uploaded one of the Nexus 4 MP4 clips (~25MB) that make X6 puke:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/183 ... 0Gecko.mp4
Thank you also for suggesting using MediaInfo. Attached image is its report.
If you can suggest a workaround that is better than WMV conversion, I am sure Nexus 4 owners will appreciate it.
I hope Corel folks come up with a better way of error handling than just crashing. Something like "This video is incompatible due to xx reason." would be a good start. Without it even narrowing the cause down to the Nexus 4 files was a problem for me as I had a mix of clips shot with three different cameras, most of which worked, and some seemingly random ones inexplicably leading X6 to crashing.
Cheers,
Vlad.

Re: X6 Pro started crashing. Tells 2 send in dump file. Wher
VSX7 doesn't like the file also. I can play it once, but soon as I scrub it, VSX7 hangs.
There isn't something fundamentally wrong in WMV conversion if done right, like any other conversion.
I tried your file on two other editing softwares I have and it plays and edits at no apparent problem, but one thing concern me is audio sync. With variable frame rate you might hit the spot where your audio will loose sync in the long project.
I agree with you that VS errors window should be more informative.

Re: X6 Pro started crashing. Tells 2 send in dump file. Wher
I downloaded the clip, first of all, I played the file with QuickTime and VLC, no problems, played fine.
Then opened the file in VSX7, again I can play and scrub at will, other than a slight delay when playback starts there is no hesitation, program hang or white screen.
I can edit the clip by applying FX filters and still have no problems, however If I try to use the sound mixer to change the volume or try to change the sound in anyway, VSX7 freezes and task manager needs to be used to close the program. so, using Format Factory, I converted to MP4, using the converted file VSX7 now plays the clip correctly, sound can be edited without issue, I did notice that the original file, according to Format Factory, is using the DivX codec, which would explain why the clip does not play in the 64 bit version of VSX7 ( I am using the 32 bit version).

Robert, I wouldn't count on the info FF is given. Two better options are MediaInfo and Gspot.RobertOZ wrote:----- I did notice that the original file, according to Format Factory, is using the DivX codec, which would explain why the clip does not play in the 64 bit version of VSX7 ( I am using the 32 bit version).

Gspot indicate this file as AVC1 and .3gp4 and we know it's a common cellular format.

Hi
I have downloaded the sample , thank you
When inserting to VS X7 the Show messages activates, that to me indicates the program can read the properties, they show as:-
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30.328 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Baseline Profile Video: 12136 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Mono
MPEG AAC Audio: 96 Kbps
However I have my own on-going problem in setting project properties with an error or “Improper Argument”
Although I am in Pal area my project properties do use 30fps whilst using this sample.
The sample seems to play ok in clip and project mode.
Video Studio X6
Inserts to timeline without problems, except having to set the project properties to NTSC at 30fps
Clip playback looks ok
Project playback is jerky/jumping—I created Smart Proxy files, project playback now looks ok.
So far I do not have any problems in using this video sample.
I converted the sample to MP4 using similar settings
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 12000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps
Again no problems in doing that?
I also used Sound Mixer with no problems.
Vlad
I asked earlier if you are running the latest version of QuickTime?
You did say that the crashes were tolerable, now much more frequent, so what has changed on your pc?
