Smart Selection Tool Not Working Properly

My selection tool in PSP X6 Ultimate has suddenly stopped working. I've had no trouble in the past; but now it will not make a smart collection. I do get ants but they are not marching ants; that is, it does show dots but they are not moving and do not follow as I move the brush. It then freezes up the whole program and I need to do a Cntl Alt Delete to exit the program. I've used the brush many times in the past so I know what kind of selection it should make; so it's not the type of selection I'm trying to make. I reset the brush to default but no avail. Can you help? (All other selection tools, etc., are working properly.)

If something is corrupted (it happens), the easiest way to fix that is to reset PSP to it's default settings using the Shift key method.
Save your workspace.
Close PSP.
Open PSP holding the Shift key at the same time, until you see a message telling you PSP is reverting to it's default settings. Click OK.
You will have to reset some Preferences and File Locations, but that's not too hard.

Thanks so much for answering. I do have a few questions re: resetting to default. I deleted quite a few brushes from X6 and then imported quite a few from PSP9. In resetting, will the brushes default to those originally in X6 while wiping out the ones I imported from PSP9?

And will I lose all my saved "recall" (green buttons) in various KPT operations? I rely heavily on those; and they would be very difficult to replicate.

Also, I'm not understanding exactly what might happen to my file preferences? I'm not, though, concerned about my brush SETTINGS.

Hope I'm not bothering you too much with these detailed questions; but, your answers to these questions would be so helpful in deciding what to do, such as if I can or would need to save some things elsewhere or make notations before I reset.
