Wish list for Paint Shop Pro version X8

Post by BrianCee »

It is usual when a new version is released that we start a new topic to allow users to say what they would like to see in the next version of PaintShop pro thus giving Corel developers one topic to follow to understand customers requirements.

Please keep any suggestions sensible - plus this is not a place to complain about what YOU may consider to be bugs or faults. Those items should be placed in a new thread or tagged onto an existing one dealing with that same issue.

The previous wish list for version X7 can be found here :- http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=51390

I would like to see the ability to stitch photos together automatically as 'panoramas'.
Ideally this should be based on AutoStitch: "a new dimension in automatic image stitching" as used in Serif's PanoramaPlus and others.
Adobe Systems' Photoshop includes a tool known as Photomerge and, in the latest versions, the new Auto-Blend.

As a bonus it would be great if this feature in PSP allowed you to manipulate the resulting parts of the image as layers.

The big thing I would like to see is 16-bit/channel support on all tools. Right now, the background eraser tool cannot handle 16-bit images when in discontiguous mode.

As a 2nd vote, better color management is super-important. For whatever reason, PSP, Aftershot, and Photopaint all report different color temperatures even when my camera is set to a specific Kelvin value, and none of them report the right number. (I shoot raw files.) Aftershot is the closest to being right. Would love to be able to use the X-Rite plugin tools to create camera profiles to get more accurate colors.

Of course, this suggests a need for 100% Photoshop plugin support. Any plugin that works in PS should also work in PSP, otherwise, you really can't claim PS plugin compatibility.

On a similar line, I thought XMP support meant that any edits I did in Aftershot would carry over to PSP. Didn't work out that way. Would love to see this happen, or better yet, incorporate Aftershot into PSP as the Adjust mode.

And yes, I agree that an automated tool for stitching images is long overdue. At least Photopaint gives you an indication when image features line up with each other.

Similar to this, a tool to aid in focus stacking would be super-cool.

BTW - if PSP had fully-professional tools, I'd be happy to pay a fully-professional price for it.

Interface (GUI) options

Post by bobtail »

A really good thing about PSP -X6 at the moment- is the customisable GUI, with editable toolbars etc. I would like to see even more options here, including extra large icons for those of us with deteriorating eyesight. Remember many serious photographers are of retirement age.
An extended choice of skins would also increase choice.
I would also like to be able to Right Click and select "Edit with another programme"
The killer function would be the equivalent of the "Control Point" system in Nik NX2 & Viveza. ( by far the best selection method for local adjustments with various tools.

As I work on larger images 5616 x 3744 pixels (21 Mp) I am finding some delays in processing the images. AS images get larger and larger, this processing delay will continue to get larger. I would like to see:
1. Recognition of multicore processors and using them to the fullest.
2. Using the alternative of mouse wheel control of all values which can be changed (eg Levels sliders and values currently is not controlled by mouse wheel) I find that when some of the sliders are very small that slide adjustments can be very coarse and I can get better control with the mouse wheel.

* I would like to see much better support for svg format, eg exporting as svg saves info as vector when vector shapes are used

* I have disliked the dark background for the desktop work area since it was first introduced, want to ability to have a white desktop/background, not sure if this was changed in v. 7, without improved support for svg and the ability to change the background, I won't be buying further updates to PSP. I have been a supporter of the product since version 5, often purchasing up to 3 licenses so that I could have it on my home computer, my work computer and my laptop, and YES I know that PSP is now considered a photo editor program.

Thx

You can change the workboard/pasteboard color in X7.

View -> background color -> White

There are five choices in total: Black, dark gray, medium gray, light gray, and white.

Better vector tools - again not asking that PSP be brought on par with other vector editors like inkscape or xara or Corel Draw. But just beef the current stuff up a bit. Small changes will go a long way.

1) Be able to change the node type while drawing. I would like to be able to convert a node from symmetric to cusp or assemetric while drawing to get the fastest most accurate setup that I can. Right now it's me picking spots, and then slowly correcting later. All it would take is a quick key press while dragging out the direction handle.

2) Boolean functions - basic methods of combining different vectors into one path. These include Union, Difference, Intersection, Exclusion and Division. This has benefits not just for design, but also for selections and editing. So it's a win-win.

3) Blur Layer Effect/Adjustment layer - I know this one sounds odd but hear me out. One of my perceived weaknesses of vectors is the inability to blur them without converting them to raster elements. To solve this we can add a layer effect or an adjustment layer. This works well because you can then also use the same effect in regular photo editing for advanced editing practices. It's not limited to vectors.

4) Adjust curve by dragging line segment - Not sure how to best execute this. But I'd love to be able to adjust the curve of a line by dragging the line. Sometimes getting those two curve handles to cooperate is difficult. Sometimes I just want to make the curve bigger or smaller without distorting it.

5) Path to Object - Convert a path into its own object the size of the current line width.

6) Variable line widths - The ability to adjust the width of a line at any node with handles to determine how quickly the width changes between nodes. Technically we could just use #5 of my list to simulate this. But thought I'd ask for it anyway.

7) Vector masks, the ability to set a vector as a mask without converting it to a layer. Technically not a big deal to work with as it is. We create a selection from a vector shape, then use that selection to make or edit a mask. But that's so tedious. How about just letting the program deal with it like a mask? Actually, this could be solved with the next request as well.

8) Clipping masks

Ver X8 should contain, among other suggestions of course,
1) an option to make the colour slider the default instead of the colour wheel after double clicking the fore or back ground colour in the Materials Palette box.
2) a single clck option to generate a colour palette from an image without having to select each swatch separately
3) import -- easily -- an existing palette that could have been created in a number of different formats
4) perhaps this exists .... but a method to colourize a black and white with some intuitive way to indicate possiblle colours - ie sky, blue and cloudy (for the white), sky dark and stormy, green vegataion and similar situations -- combined with basic colour backgrounds for different types of images: desert, mountains, lake and rivers, portrait wall background etc..
Not knowing how difficult this might be to achieve from a technical aspect I boldly suggest it. Even if PSP made a stab at it one could then edit the image rather than have to select each section and create layers and attemp the colourization from scratch. Wish list - sure it is.

I would like to see less complexity for simple things. For 14 years I've been creating detailed, multilayer images using simple common tools in a dinosaur called Micrografx. I don't have to draw paths then convert them to layers then all the other stuff that goes with all this fancy software. I'd draw the symbol (or cut it out of another photo image) with a mask tool and when done, voila, it's an object/symbol. If I want more, I click copy. No keeping track of layers, where it is, is it active, no extra box on the side to track. If I want text, I click the T, type the text, click done if I'm happy with font and size. If I want a drop shadow, I click the symbol, hit the drop shadow button if it's a normal gray shadow. Done. I guess what I'm saying is I want the option to make it simpler, and leave the complex machinations to the pros. 90% of what I do I can do with a few simple tools and do it fast. My work doesn't require high level precision or artiness. My landscape clients are still happy with my digital mockups of the proposed design.

My Wish list for Paint Shop Pro version X8

  1. PSP accept CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT native formats. Something is lost with Photoshop conversion to keep layers and switch between the two programs.
  2. Text handling similar to CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator.
  3. Better CMYK and Pantone support.

Enable the use of Gradients and Patterns in the Add Border function. Currently this function only supports Colors.

I can accomplish this manually but adding the functionality would be nice.
