Roto Pen problem X7
(Did not have this trouble with X5)I have drawn a line from A to B on a jpeg image (map) with the paint brush. The line has a circle accentuating start and finish points.I then use the roto pen to follow the irregular shaped painted line as I have done before with X5.Only problem is that on the preview, the roto penned route is no where near the painted line and does not follow it except in a general direction nowhere near the line.Help please

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Is the jpeg map in the same proportion as the format of the video you are making? In other words, the map needs to be 1920 x 1080 (or multiples thereof) if your project properties include 1920 x 1080 video.

Audio data rate: 384 kbps Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 3/2(L,C,R,SL,SR)
============
Recorded MTS clip properties in library
File format PAL HDMV Video type H.264 video upper field 1st
Attributes 24 bits 1920x1080 16.9 25.000 fps
Data rate variable (max 16800kpbs)

The map image info (given in Paint Shop Pro X5) is
Diamensions 775x746 pixels 10.764 x 10.347 Pixels per in 72.000
In view of the above info, how do I get the jpg image in the same proportion if it is not. (I will be burning a standard DVD)

It looks Ken as though your video is a pretty standard 16:9 format - but your image is almost square.
I would just crop the image to a 16:9 ratio in Paint Shop Pro - something like 775 x 436 pixels before putting it into VideoStudio

Thanks for the reply Brian.I cropped the image as your suggestion 775 pixels w by 436 h , it is better but still not following the painted line and goes over the top of the map at one point.

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
I am revisiting this post because I am still without the use of roto pen for a basic operation. I have made internet searches of no avail and have even been directed back to this post. Has anyone any idea where I could find an answer to this problem.

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Hi Kenneth
Some thoughts….
First you say your project properties are 720 x 576, yet your video is HD using 1920 x 1080
Make sure that your project properties are set to use 1920 x 1080, maybe use the AVCHD options.
Your map image should use the same aspect ratio, again resizing the image to 1920 x 1080, would fit the project perfectly.
Now RotoPen should stay on line.
Zooming into the image will reduce quality, this has been discussed before with no real solution other than to replace the image with another higher quality image. Use an image editor to achieve that.
Provide us with a sample of your project….
Create a sample project, edit and apply rotopen.
Create a Smart Package
Upload the Zipped Smart Package to Microsoft One Drive
We can then see exactly what problems you are having..

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Am I under a misapprehension here? Although the video was recorded in 1920x1080, I want to burn a standard DVD and that is why I have made my project properties 720 x 576 and 16.9.Does this not have to be the case to burn a standard DVD? The map image I am using was resized to 775x436 which is 16.9 but roto pen still won’t follow the correct path. In preferences, I have changed “keep aspect ratio” in the image resampling option under the edit tab to “fit to project size” but this has made no difference

Hi Kenneth
Try changing the project properties to match your original Video Files Properties, that will be AVCHD 1920 x 1080
What are the original dimensions of the map image?
Try resizing to at least 1920 x 1080, Any size above that provided its 16:9 ratio.
Now try RotoPen

The original map image info (given in Paint Shop Pro X5) is 775x746 pixels 10.764 x 10.347 Pixels per in .I tried changing it to 1920x1080 yesterday but roto
pen still did not trace correctly.I am not at my pc at the moment but will change the project properties if you think that is the answer, can I keep this 1920x 1080 size and still burn a standard DVD from there.(Do not have a blue ray burner and no one I know has a b/r player)

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Hi Ken
You should set your project properties to match your video files then they will display correctly in video studio preview screen.
Go to Settings – Preferences F6 – tick Show Messages
Start a new project and add a video file (Avchd) choose yes from the popup window.
After editing I would render to same as your originals, that will create an Avchd video file.
You can save that video till you purchase that Bluray Burner
Using that video file in a new project render to Mpeg2 DVD to create a compliant video file suitable for burning to Disc, yes I realise you are rendering twice but I think that may be the best option.
You can of course render the AVCHD project directly to Mpeg2 DVD
Map Image,
Ideally--any image should be the same or larger than the project frame size, for standard DVD that would be 1024 x 720, for HD 1920 x 1080.
If you intend to zoom into the image then these image dimensions should be larger.
Even so the sizes you are using may not produce the quality, text within the map may be difficult to read.

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Thanks for the reply Trevor. I would like to go for the simplest option, so, to clarify-can I just change the project properties to 1920x1080 and when the project is complete render to Mpeg2 DVD as I have always done up to now for a standard DVD?
Also, images will have to be 1920x1080 for the above situation? I have only viewed the images on the preview screen but I am not too concerned with the map text quality as I apply larger start and finish town names text on the image in Paint Shop Pro before importing into VS

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Hi Kenneth
For existing projects just change the project properties to use Avchd.
Then render to Mpeg2 DVD
Your images should use an aspect ratio of 16:9.
Larger images at 1920 x 1080 may be best, as yours are smaller then you have no choice but to use those.
First you need to get RotoPen working correctly, so change the project properties to AVCHD, then try RotoPen

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
In project properties, I have changed the project format to AVCHD which now shows 24 bit 1920x1080 25fps ,upper field 1st HDMV 16.9 H264 video video data rate variable (max 18000kbps) audio data rate 384kbps dolby dig audio 48 Khz 2/0 (LR).Duration (so far) 31 min.A Map that looked square in the library was resized in paint shop pro to 1920x1080 as roto pen did not work properly on it.The result is that now roto pen works! Thanks a million for your advice Trevor.
My next question is what do I do when I get to the rendering a standard DVD step because I do not understand how the above properties will allow a standard DVD to be burnt

Re: Roto Pen problem X7
Hi Ken,
When you select DVD the program will automatically resize everything to suit a DVD profile, you only need to ensure that !6:9 is selected and add any chapters, text etc.
The DVD quality should not be affected by the fact that you are using 1920x1080 resolution, not as good as when you create an MPEG-4 video for playing on the computer or downloading to a flash drive for playing on your TV, but that is to be expected.
