Splitting a project
Hi All.
Firstly, once again I apologise if I'm asking something again. Since the stroke my memory is shot. I think I partially asked something similar before. I edited up a project on my old PC and it is way to big for a DVD. It is of some church roadshow plays along with oleo acts in between each one. I did it up in chronological order, and as I said, too big. A fair few of the people I am doing it up for have since asked if I could set it up so that they can access only the parts they want to see. So I thought if I broke it down into several small projects of each individual roadshow and combine all the oleo acts into one project, it would mean I could make up the dvds with a menu so that selection is easier. Now to make it more of a challenge the computer I did the project on crashed and burned and because we hope to do a bit of travelling I replaced it with a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1. I had the techs back up my data onto a portable drive so I have all the original stuff. By some miracle I have managed to get the project back onto VS4 and even managed to link the clips again. What I can't seem to work out, and I know I have done it before, is to break up the original project into the individual projects. I have two video tracks, a title strack and of course the voice. I tried to load the original project and then delete all that I didn't want and then I would save the remainder as an individual project. The challenge is that it only seems to select the first video track and not the second video and title track. I have tried with the ripple editing set both ways and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I could ask one more thing. Because I struggle remembering the how of things is there a better, simplar program that I would be better off using.
Thank you All and kind regards,
Mike.

Re: Splitting a project
I am not sure what you have already tried or why it did not work but please try it this way
Open the project complete in your timeline.
Look under the preview window to a white line with an orange 'finger' under each end.
hover your mouse cursor over the right hand end 'finger' and it will change to a two headed arrow - left click and slide left.
you will notice the timeline cursor is moving and an orange line appears above the timeline - keep moving left until you reach the point at which you want the first section to end.
You can confirm you have the correct portion by playing your project - it will only play the bit with the orange line over it and stop when the line stops.
Now go to "Share >> Create VIDEO file" and since you have said you are creating a DVD choose one of the DVD options.
NOW here is the important bit - when the create video file save box appears first click the "options" button down near the bottom right corner and when that options box opens make sure to dot the "preview range" button and NOT the entire project button - OK out of that
Check where you are saving it and give it a sensible name - "project - part one" say
Click on "Save" and Videostudio will render a video containing only the bit selected.
When it completes go back to the timeline and move the right hand orange finger to where the second bit is to end - - but now also move the left one to where the second one is to start (not necessarily where the first one ended - up to you)
Now go to Share etc again and go through the process as before but this time your video is "Part Two"
keep repeating that process for as many bits as you want creating a new video each time.
When finished remember to move the orange 'fingers' out to the ends of their line again - or else you will confuse yourself next time - many do.
Now when you get to the Create a DVD section delete anything in it's timeline and import all the videos you have just made and as you create your DVD menu you will see that VideoStudio has created a selectable title for each video.
I hope that is clear but don't be afraid to keep coming back with your questions - we'll get you there in the end

Re: Splitting a project
Brian,
but this is splitting the final VIDEO not the project. How one can split easily a project into 2 or more VSP files?

Re: Splitting a project
Well if you really want two projects - and I don't think that is what Mike really wants then.
Put the project in the timeline and decide where you want the split to be - delete EVERYTHING after that point - DO NOT SAVE the project.
Now go to "File >> "Save As" and create a .vsp with a new name.
now use 'undo' to bring back all the deleted items - and delete everything before the split point - again "File >> Save as" to create a second .vsp with a new name.
back to the timeline and 'undo' all the second lot of deletions - now you can save again
But now you have two .vsp files you still have to render out videos from each of them to create your DVD - plus when you delete the first half of your project to make the second .vsp all sorts of horrible things can happen in the timeline - even with Ripple editing enabled, Much easier to make your videos direct from one project.

Re: Splitting a project
IF you want to do it that way ---
left click on the first clip you want to delete to highlight it - go to the last clip and hold down 'shift' as you left click on it - standard Windows multi-select procedure - all between will be highlighted - press 'delete' on your keyboard.
If you use my first method you will have no problem with syncing - nothing is deleted or moved.
If you use the second method to make two projects then you must make sure ripple editing is enabled - and I still will not guarantee that things will remain in sync - the main reason I did not suggest making two .vsp files originally

Re: Splitting a project
Hi again Brian.
I'm trying to use the trim markers but I can't get the movement of them fine enough. I've adjusted my mouse settings and taken the dynamic movement off but I just can't get the movement fine enough.
Thanks again Mate.

Re: Splitting a project
Directly under the trim line under the preview window are a series of icons.
The very left hand one 'plays ' the whole project - the next one takes you back to the very beginning
The next one moves the TIMELINE cursor back ONE frame - the next one moves the TIMELINE cursor forward ONE frame - the next one takes you to the very end of your project .
So get your cursor to the approx position and then click on the forward one/back one to get TIMELINE cursor to the precise edit spot - careful not to click beginning or end instead.
Note that the orange 'finger' has not moved - BUT - to the right of the white line and orange fingers are two square brackets - technically known as mark in and mark out selectors, but for your purposes clicking on the left square bracket will align the left 'finger' with the timeline cursor and similarly the right hand square bracket will align the right 'finger' with the timeline cursor.
OR
Once again get your cursor to approximately the correct position
Under the right bottom corner of the preview screen is a small digital clock - the numbers are Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames
If you only want to move a few frames click on the frames number and it will start flashing - at the right hand end of the clock are up and down arrows - the up arrow advances one frame per click the down arrow goes back one frame - once in the correct position click any where onscreen to stop the numbers flashing and 'set' them
if you want more movement you can use the seconds number and clicking the arrows will then move i second.
As before only the timeline cursor will move and you need to use the square brackets to align the fingers.

Re: Splitting a project
Hi
First of all how long is the entire project in minutes.?
There are some details here in using the Project Playback Range.
http://www.lata.me.uk/corel/bluebar/blue_bar.htm
The keyboard F3 and F4 will set the “Mark-In and Mark-Out” points, the square brackets above the clock will do the same.
Once set the range is indicated by the Orange bar, red/white for earlier versions.
As Brian says you can play that selection and also render that selection to a new video file, I assume a DVD mpeg2.
Once you have the new video files you can burn all to disc creating a separate title for each, that will create a link within the menu for each video, allowing you to choose which to play.

Re: Splitting a project
Thanks to all who helped with this production, I would not have got it finished if it were not for you all.
The only downside is that I found that when I saved the clips it didn't keep the second channel of videos on which I'd filmed close-ups and other shots which never came out on the saved clips.
Thank you all for your patience and help, remembering things I used to be able to do is a bit overwhelming at times, I wouldn't have kept going whithout this Forum's help.
Kind regards,
Mick.
