Best YouTube quality for an edited AVI file with VS Pro X6

Post by alexba »

I am sure the answer to my question has already been posted but it is hard to find exactly what I need help with.

I captured an NTSC video (DVD encoder type 1, 29.97 fps, 720x480, 4:3) using firewire to my computer using VS Pro X6. Both the unedited and edited rendered AVI files are clear and smooth when played on my Windows 7 Pro PC. I created the edited file using the Same As Project Settings option.

The edited file, uploaded to YouTube, looks like it is skipping frames. Also, there is some loss in quality but I suppose that would be normal for YouTube.

For YouTube, how to I render this project file so that it plays smoothly? If I have to install codecs that are not included with VS Pro X6, what do you recommend?

Thanks.

Hi

When you edited your DV-Avi clips did your project properties match the video properties.
When you Share Create Video File –Same as Project Properties should create a DV-Avi same as original settings.

Interlacing……
DV-Avi uses Lower Field for its interlacing, if the Project Properties were different the program probably used Upper Field as that is used by default. That will impact on quality.

Once you have set the project properties you can use either Same as First Clip or Same as Project Properties to create the new file.

Aspect ratio…..
By default VS uses 16:9, you say your files were 4:3, again your project properties should be the same. However you can use 16:9, your video will simply sit in the middle creating black borders left and right, render the project using 16:9

Using the new completed DV-Avi video, convert to mpeg4 using the Upload to web – YouTube should create a suitable video.
Simply cancel the upload will allow you to play to test quality, then upload using your own account.

I think I followed your instructions correctly.

I ended up with a small mpeg4 file on YouTube that was worse quality than the AVI rendered file that I had manually uploaded. So I just don't understand VS and making quality, smooth YouTube videos from NTSC tapes.

I would think if the edited and rendered file plays so nicely on my PC--why that same file drops frames when streamed from YouTube. Why do my videos do that? I don't think I see the same problem on other home made YouTube videos but probably nobody used VS to make YouTube videos.

Lots of people use VideoStudio to make videos for Youtube - many of them are members on here.

I make videos for Youtube by using the default 'upload to web' settings for Youtube within VideoStudio - I cancel the automatic upload and then go to Youtube and manually upload.

If it plays well on your computer perhaps it is something in your internet connection - post a link to one of your videos and let us see what is happening.

I don't do much for UT but the few I do I prefer rendering to WMV and than upload with Firefox.

This video demonstrates that although it is very clear, it also does not play smoothly like the file on my PC. I tried several types of rendered files and this looks the best as far as visual quality.

Notice: this is not an AVI file that I was first working on but a 2nd project from an HD video. In either case, the videos are clear but don't play smoothly on YouTube.

I do not see any thing at all wrong with the quality of that video - couple of places there is a short stutter but I think that's more to do with Youtube than your video.

Alex, I've downloaded your clip off UT. I have 134MB, of HD with ~4MB/s . That isn't a lot but reasonable for daylight home movie. What camera you were using?
