No single "perfect" video editor

Post by wstagner »

All popular consumer video editing softwares have "issues" of one kind or another.
As many of you are probably aware, Cyberlink just introduced PowerDirector 13...apparently without ANY beta testing.
Not too many happy campers over there:

Well,
Just browse this comparison from the German http://www.tests.videoaktiv.de site
(I had to zip it to be attached) and see who got higher/lower score.

As I first used Avid media composer 20 years ago when a turnkey apple propriety system cost ~30000$ I can assure you that it wasn't perfect.
Regarding the dialog between the programer/engineer and the user/editor here a short story.
~15 years ago I was involved to some degree with introducing an affordable editing software to the local market. So I was in personal contact with the persons behind the bits and the bytes. I was reviewing periodical updates and developments. Once I received an update and I noticed that a certain menu layout was changed. This change faced the user to a potential mistake by pressing a button that will effectively loose a delicate FX planing.
It took me half a day of long distance cross country phone call to alert and explain why a change of menu design is critical.
They just could not understand me as they never actually edit anything to meet deadline....

For the sake of speed, the winner in the Videoaktiv tests was Cyberlink PowerDirector 13 (74 points), followed by Sony Movie Studio 13 (72 points) and then Video Studio X7 (68 points)...

speedwise they're all close now, methinx
i sure like the ability to customize the various output sizes via menu in VS and PD
i bot PD 12 last year for less than $50, and I still use mostly VS7 because it's EZier

that said, I wish they'd fix that big issue we reported in beta about the program crashing after selecting an output type, then returning to editing b4 rendering the file.

I never installed sp1 because of all the reported problems
