Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
When I capture video from my camcorder, although it does capture properly, (once I look at the video), the preview window shows the video very jumpy, as if many frames are being skipped. Audio coming through the computer speakers is fine.
Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix it?
I have a core i7 processor, 6GB of memory and 2TB fast hard drive.
Thanks.

Re: Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
What kind of video are you capturing: AVCHD, HDV, or standard definition? And how exactly are you capturing it: via USB or Firewire? Apart from HDV/DV, most modern camcorders, and particularly the high def ones, don't require "capturing". Instead, you hook up the camcorder to the computer via USB and treat the camcorder's disk as another computer disk, and simply transfer the video to the computer like any other file. Then open the transferred videos in VS for editing.

I am transferring old Hi8 video tapes through the DV output of the camcorder by firewire to my computer.

Microsoft changed the DV codec with Win 7, so that could be one reason for the shakes you are seeing. But you could also try downloading the small freeware program WinDV from www.windv.mourek.cz A number of us here use it successfully, and it also has the advantage of allowing you to assign your own name to the captured files. Ultimately, though, if the captured video plays smoothly, there is no real reason to worry.

Hi Ken
If it’s the same issue I reported this during beta testing, I think it appeared in one of the later beta versions.
The good news is that the final captured video was ok, at least for me, just a but off-putting to see the preview screen judder?

I remember checking this out after Lata had reported it, but I had no trouble. All worked fine for me.

Re: Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
The videos, once captured, play just fine. It is just a matter of not being able to watch the capture (in real time) on the computer since it is like watching every 10th frame of the original tape. Just need to watch the video on the camcorder's little screen.
As there are other capture programs that work, I was just wondering why VideoStudio doesn't do this correctly.
Thanks.

Hi
I know it used to work ok prior to the release of Video Studio X7
We do not work for Corel, all I can suggest is you report this to Corel Support or their Facebook Account which as far as I know is read my Corel Employees.
Unfortunately I am unable to test DV capture at the moment, my son has borrowed my camera.
Try WinDV as mentioned by Ken

Mine still works fine, I used it a couple of weeks ago to capture some files whilst I was capturing others to my main pc.

Hi
I have tested again and I still have problems, its like pressing the “forward” button.
What I see there is what I see when capturing or playing the video.
Graham, maybe it’s a windows issue with W8 getting it right, Hmmmm
I have passed the details to Corel, hopefully they will be able to replicate?

Re: Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
Just checked on my win7 pc.
There is a very slight flicker, but as I would normally only use the preview to check it's still going, it all looked good to me, only concentrating on it did it show up as the slight flicker.
That was watching a football team train, running around kicking the ball etc.

Hi Graham
Just to give you a better idea as to what is happening I have uploaded a screen capture video showing the poor playback.
Starts with Play, then Forward then a short capture.
As you can see its no way smooth, certainly would not watch the football. and yes the camera plays ok......

Re: Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
It just happens to be that I was asked today to capture 3 DV tapes so I can comment on this topic.
When I boot to win7 and capture with VSX7, preview plays what looks to me at ~half the FPS, at 12fps but not erratic.
When I boot to XP and capture with VSX7 preview looks much better but still I don't think it's the full 25fps.
The file itself is 100% ok.
- I always preferred capturing DV in movie maker 2.1.
**I just looked your capture Trevor, looks like 2FPS or less. something is faulty in your system.

I'm a bit busy at the moment, but if I get 5 minutes, I also did a screen capture, so I'll post it for you to see. Mine looks nothing like that!!

Re: Why is preview window "jumpy" during capture?
Hi Asik1
Something faulty in my system ---Yes you would assume that, I have checked the usual things, changing Firewire cards and cables, graphics drivers etc.
I was one of the X7 beta testers, this problem first showed with Beta 03, I think, I then re-installed Beta 02, which was fine. Earlier versions of VS X6 works ok.
Yes I am quite willing to agree it may be a conflict with my system and X7 except the original poster "sbudaj" has the same issue.
I don’t use mini DV any more after upgrading to HD, so not too much of a problem, but even so it should work for everyone.
With beta02 and earlier versions capture and preview was in real time, the preview screen looks perfect running at 25fps.
Don’t get me wrong I can capture, if capture is the correct word, it more like transferring the data as no trans-coding taking place, what you have is what you get DV-Avi.
Graham
If you are busy don’t worry to much about a screen capture, but as I say capture preview should be perfect, at least it always has been upto X7
I have passed this back to Corel to see if they can replicate the problem, pity they did not listen when beta testing.
