PSP X6 Giving Me Grief!

Post by Muriel »

Good Day!

I am sitting in front of a HP Laptop with Intel i7 processor, 12G Ram, 64Bit Operating System. I installed PSP X6 several months ago and after much hassle, has worked flawlessly until perhaps two weeks ago.

- It began freezing, but after a minute or so it would straighten itself out. (I could hear the hard drive whirring while this was happening.)

- I uninstalled and reinstalled the program from the disk, including all the user settings (saved work areas)

- Problem remained and because worse until the program was unusable. I reverted to Version X4.

- After using Version X4 for a couple of days, I tried Version X6 again and that particular problem seemed to have corrected itself.

- I tried using the 'Balls and Bubbles' feature, but each time the program simply froze and stayed in that state until I shut it down via Task Manager. Went through this exercise perhaps a dozen times.

- Used the disk to 'repair' the program. Yeah, Right!

- Uninstalled and reinstalled the program once more, this time choosing to not delete the user settings, since I wanted to keep my saved work areas.

- Now the freezing issue is back with a vengeance. Now it does not sort itself out. It simply remains frozen until I use Task Manager to end it.

OOkay, now I appeal to the folks who hang out here and who know much more than I do about restoring my program to a state where I can use it. Can anyone help?

PS: I just tried the 'Balls and Bubbles' feature, and it no longer works, even though it did half an hour ago!

Many thanks..

All the uninstalling / reinstalling isn't helping. Did you use the cleanup tool? It's available from above.
Do you do a clean reboot after uninstalling?
Perhaps use a registry cleaner and do a defrag. It could be a large number of things.

If you PC is making noises and causing PSP to freeze maybe you need to get your PC checked out. I'm no technician but it sounds more like your PC than a programme.

Have you tried contacting Corel?

Good Evening..

Thank-you for your prompt reply! You hit the nail on the head.. all this uninstalling and reinstalling is an exercise in futility.

I haven't used the cleanup tool. Not sure where it is.

I haven't used a registry cleaner, but that may indeed do the trick.

I do not her the whirring until the program freezes, and once it has sorted itself out the whirring stops.

I do think you are absolutely right. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the program and everything to do with the computer.. and my love/hate relationship with Windows 8!

It is late and messing with the computer would not be my smartest plan at this time. I shall tackle it in the morning.. For now, a glass of wine is in order!

I once had aproblem with an external hard drive. I was scanning through some images using irfanview and it suddenly slowed down. Tried to trans fer the folder of images back to the main drive and found it took about 5 minutes to copy 5 images of about 4 Mb each. Normally it was less than 3 seconds. Eventually discovered that part of the drive was corrupted and it was reading and re reading the address / data (I guess as the data was eventually recovered .)
A disk check and correction solved the problem.
I suspect that this may be part of the problem as hard disks can develop faults at any time and would explain the lot of whirring as PSP tries to write backup data. Reinstalling a program should probably be a last resort as it seems with Corel PSP the program leaves material behind with each uninstall.

Thank-you, Trueblue!

I apologize for taking this long to reply.. I had more or less given up on Version X6 and reverted back to X4.

I downloaded and ran the clean-up tool, and it did indeed clean up. Seems the program has been 'changed or moved and do I wish to remove this shortcut?" So, is it actually gone? Should I try reinstalling it? What is my next step?

Many thanks..

OOH.. Muriel Again!

Hallelujah! Many, many thanks to the folks who hang out in this site!

I downloaded and ran the clean-up tool, and found myself somewhat dismayed to find the program had been removed.. not sure what I expected, but I hadn't seen that coming! I reinstalled it, and Viola! The 'Balls & Bubbles' effect, which I use often, WORKS! At least it doesn't simply bring the program to a grinding halt! There are a few others that did the same thing, so I assume they all work as well!

I can't tell you how delighted I am!

Drinks all around and a BBQ at my house on Saturday!

Good Evening!

I cannot remember when I have been this frustrated! :x

A few weeks ago I downloaded and ran the Version X6 Cleanup tool and was delighted that it worked! The 'balls and bubbles' effect, along with others that had caused the program to freeze, now worked! I thought I had the issue licked.

Last evening I discovered the issue had returned. The 'balls and bubbles' effect once again caused the program to freeze! Today I went through the entire cleanup procedure once again, but alas! The issue remains.. the program still freezes when I try to use that effect.

Can someone smarter than I tell me what I am doing wrong? I would dearly love to have this program working flawlessly..

Many thanks..

Corel's programs still use some old ActiveX components and if something is "changed" it does not then work correctly.

Idealy, if Corel enabled install their program as portable... no registry change.
