I'm having problems with Paintshop Pro X6 after installing it on my new Windows 8.1 laptop. It worked fine on my old Vista Desktop. If I open a 10mb image and do some editing on it (doesn't matter what kind of editing) and then "SAVE" it, the file size goes to less than 2mb. If I do a "SAVE AS" instead, I don't get the file size reduction, in fact it goes up a bit. I've gone into the Save Options and made sure Encoding is set to Lossless Encoding. When I look at the reduced file, the dimensions are the same (5540x 3698) and the file is still 300dpi. This is very annoying and I'm struggling to find the problem. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Doug

Re: Reduced File Size after save
The compression is set to 20, so every time you save it compresses the file size.
I only use Save As and have set the compression under Options, set to 1.
It is very tempting to click on Save when the message box pops up, but using the F12 key (Save As) only, saves a lot of frustration!

Re: Reduced File Size after save
Joelle - I have Lossless Compression selected so the compression slide bar is disabled. Mine is at 1 anyways.
Tadjio - I had the same program X6 installed on my Vista Desktop.

Re: Reduced File Size after save
Hi Guys
I see similar results. Using X4 and X7
Original image is 860Kb, Chrysanthemum.jpg from Windows Picture library
If I “save as” and set the compression to Standard compression “1” then the resultant file is 594Kb
If I set Lossless then the new image is 673Kb.

Re: Reduced File Size after save
I've been playing with this a little more and getting even more frustrated. If I open a jpeg in the Edit Tab, and do nothing but hit the Save Button, the fill size gets decreased greatly. So it appears to me that there must be some place where you should be able to change the Save Settings like you do with the Save As Settings. However, I can't find anywhere in the Preferences to do this. So it looks like every time I open a jpeg in Edit Mode, I have to do a SAVE AS to save it and get 2 files now. Then go back and delete the original file. There must be a way of changing the setting for SAVE.

Re: Reduced File Size after save
As Kath says, there is no way to change the SAVE Compression. It is hard-coded into the program (or somewhere in the Registry but I can't find it;)DBrook wrote:So it looks like every time I open a jpeg in Edit Mode, I have to do a SAVE AS to save it and get 2 files now. When you do a SAVE AS, you can overwrite the original by clicking on it, or click Save, or just press Return/Enter, and then saying Yes to replace it.
