Project size too large

I am trying to make a DVD from a movie I downloaded but I can't get the size to fit to a DVD-R. The movie file is AVI 674 MB. 1hr 20min 21sec. When I add the movie clip to my project, it comes to 5.29 GB. How can I make the size to fit on a 4.7 GB disc?
