Losing Image Size when carrying out cosmetic alterations

Post by Petejan57 »

HI Folks

Newbie user here.

I have read the PDF manual and looked at help topics but still a bit bamboozled. When I alter a picture it seems to loose image size by quite a large margin. As an example I cloned a picture for an office competition and when we got through to the next round they needed the original in its largest format. On checking the size on the PC it has reduced from 2.5mb to around 175kb and I cannot understand why cloning or any other alteration changes the size of the picture considerably.

Is this the case or is there a generic setting, I cant find any, that I should have the programme set at to maintain image size when carrying out alterations.

Any help would be good.

Cheers

Pete

Assuming that you're talking about a jpeg image:

Using the File/Save, or the Save button, or ctrl+s to save a file, PSP compresses it with a factor of 20, without asking.
If you want to less compression, you should use Save as... (F12). At the bottom right of the Save as dialogue you'll find an Options... button. You can enter a compression factor there, right down to 1 (no zero) for the least compression. You'll see that '20' the first time.
The Save as... Options dialogue remembers the settings, so you don't have to do it every time. Just check once in a while, it's PSP after all.

To add to the above, I have removed the Save icon from the Tools Toolbar (right-click in the workspace, select Customize) and dragged the icon into the Workspace, which makes the icon disappear.
I also periodically check that the Save As option still has the compression set to where I put it: 1, which it has, it appears to be a lot more stable than in previous versions.
Never click on Yes when the program asks if you want to save something, just hit F12 so that guarantees you are in charge of the saving and not PSP.
That way you should be safe :-)
