copying and pasting images

Post by MikeFromMesa »

I am relatively new to PaintShop Pro so perhaps I just don't know the proper way to do what to want to do and am doing it the wrong way.

I wish to load an image (for example, the image of a sky) to use as a new layer for an image I already have loaded into PSP. What I have been doing is opening the new image, selecting it and then doing a copy-and-paste. This works well enough but it takes a very long time. I timed the copy and it took 37 seconds when the clipboard was empty, 47 seconds when it was not empty. 37 seconds seems like a long time. I do not mean to be comparing PSP with Photoshop but the equivalent operation in Photoshop is essentially instantaneous. The copy was complete before I could move my hand to my smartphone to start the timer.

I am assuming I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is. Can anyone help me? Is there a better way to load a raw image and insert it as a layer in an already existing image? I am working on a MacBook Pro with plenty of RAM (16 GB) and a large SSD (512 GB). I am running PSP through Parallels in a VM, but I am also running Photoshop in the same configuration (although not running them at the same time).

How should I be doing this? Thanks.

By raw image do you mean something like a.CR2 from a Canon or just an image that you haven't manipulated yet?
What version of PSP are you using?

If you mean just an unmanipulated image you should be able to just drag and drop onto the layers palette from a folder, or from the Organizer Palette (View> Palettes> Organizer if not visible). This works on X6 and X7. Previous versions don't have this functionality if I remember correctly.

If you're meaning a raw file from a camera, you'll want to use another program to convert it to a tiff or something else. PSP's raw engine isn't too hot for doing more than one or two at a time, and the color management is questionable.

By raw I meant a CR2 image. I keep a couple of folders of shots of the sky as replacements and that was what I meant when I said raw. What I had done was load both raw images (the one I was working on and a second as a new background) into PSP and then copied the background image to paste it onto the image I was working on.

I am working on PSP X7.

I was not aware of that and, when I saw your post, I tried it. That works much, much better. Thanks for the information.

The one thing I found I do not much care for about PSP is the raw converter. There are not many editing choices and those that are there do not seem fully functional. I can darken shadows, but not lift them. I can select a set of presets for Highlight Recovery but have no Highlight Protection slider than I can use to adjust as I wish. It seems pretty limited. It would be nice if PSP allowed users to select another raw converter to use instead of Corel's. With Photoshop you can select to use another editor as a replacement for ACR and I have played around using PhotoNinja as an ACR replacement and that allows someone to continue using software like Photoshop without upgrading, even after Adobe stops supporting new camera images. Just use another piece of software like PhotoNinja as an ACR replacement. Of course you have to update that software, but it is probably a lot less expensive.

On the plus side, since I plan to use PSP as an external pixel editor for the workflow software I mostly use (CaptureOne), this will not be a real problem for me. CaptureOne just sends a 16 bit tiff to X7 and that works well.

Thanks again.

You're right. The Raw converter is really limited. Photoshop Elements has Camera Raw with far more functionality. Thea RAW converter that came with my camera does more. However I use Aftershot Pro, Lightroom or Camera ACR for my RAW conversions.
