Hi - Sorry for a newbie question but please help me if you can!
I have purchased the Belkin video capture device which comes bundled with Ulead Video Studio 6SE. Video capture is fine!
Audio levels seem to rise when on a quiet scene and then get cut on a loud screen. i just want the original levels to remain without being made louder or quieter. I've spent an evening playing with settings but I'm at a loss. Please give me a push in the right direction if you can!
Thanks, Emma

It is also not clear to me whether you are talking about the original audio captured with the video, or audio that you have added? I suspect you mean the latter, but would like to have your confirmation. I have never used VS6 so cannot comment on the exact procedure you would have to follow. But there is probably control which allows you to regulate the volume of captured and added audio in the timeline view mode. In VS7/8/9, the timeline view has a couple of lines down the bottom of screen for added voice audio and added music. Your original video and captured audio will be in the top line. You can alter the volume level of the latter in VS7/8/9 by typing in a level up in a little window in the top left of screen -- there is a little speaker icon. 100 is the default capture level, so if you want it softer, you set it for something below 100, and if louder, then you set a higher figure. Ditto with the added audio tracks when you highlight them. In other words, if the captured original audio is loud and you want to hear your added audio, then lower the captured audio level and raise the added audio level. You will need to experiment to get the right balance. And don't be afraid of major increases and decreases. Example: I recently did a video which included scenes I took while flying in a helicopter. The engine sounds are LOUD!!!! So I cut these back to around 20 and made my added voice-over commentary around 200, and the balance for that scene was about right!
But be aware that for VS7 and earlier versions, you can only alter the audio levels for entire clips i.e. if you increase a level, it applies to the whole clip unless you break up the clip into smaller clips. VS 8 and 9 allow you to vary volume levels within a clip and within added audio as well.

Solved!
Thanks for the replies. It's the sound I was trying to capture via my sound card. I played again last night and selecting 'Stereo Mix' instead of 'Line In' in the windows 'volume control' 'option' 'properties' 'recording' did the trick!
I'm not sure of the technicalities why but the sound is fine using this method - I wonder if it is something to do with the on board sound configuration.
(All I need to do now is solve the problem that the picture and video are not always in synch for some recordings - but I'll do some searches on previous posts first!)
Thanks again for the help - much appreciated...Emma

Hi. I am a newbie and have the same set up as you. I downloaded some video off 8mm last night and had the same problem as you said. I have the setting "line in" too. The sound went up and down but when I played it back it seemed fine.
I am having problems with the video freezing on and off during capture. Wondering if it is due to the 8mm tapes. Trying to solve each problem as it comes.
I had the other problem you say about out of synch video and audio but that was when I was using Pinnacle Studio 9. This was due to frames being dropped. This made the audio recorded at the right speed but the frames missing put the video behind it all. Are you getting any dropped frames with the belkin usb connection?
Hope might be of some help. Nice to know someone else using the same set up as me.

Same Problem

When I played mine back (after mastering to DVD) the sound was still iffy while using the 'line in' and so the 'stereo mix' seemed to solve all my problems.
The audio synch problem was noticeable when I had capture one clip form one tape and then another clip from another - and put them on one DVD as two chapters. One on it's own was fine.
I have not seen any frames dropped. My processor is a Pentium 4 3GHZ with 512MB. Tonight I will try it on an AMD2500 with 512 and see if there are any differences. What are you using?
Overall I am very pleased with the picture quality and I am sure the sound is to do with the software (rather than the Belkin USB unit).
I have not downloaded any patches to Videostudio 6SE. I will do this (as soon as BT fix my broadband!). I'll let you know if this makes any difference. I am also tempted to download version 9 demo and have a go with that - however I didn't really want to spend more money after buying the kit as it said all software would be included - I just didn't realise how old it was!

I was tempted to change my audio setting but today I managed to download TWO tapes. While the going is good I shall leave things alone. My audio was going in and out and I have noticed that some correct themselves, others stay quiet. I'm just glad to get it going.
I started off on my laptop, AMD 2.4 with 256 ram. However, the sound quality is awful compared to what I got today. Using an HP pavilion 750.uk. Only 1.6GHz with 512mb memory. Sound is better on this machine.
As to the upgrade, I did try it on my laptop and things went wrong. Happened when I upgraded pinnacle studio 8 and more recently 9. Now bit loathe to upgrade anything, especially as things seem to go fine today. Just got to see about the next process as to how that goes!!
Hope you sort out your audio/video synch. Sorry couldnt help.
Thanks for advice about audio will keep in mind for future if needed.

Re the audio/video synch, I have to first say that I have never used VS6 (only started with 7 and since have moved on 8 and 9). But I guess there is probably a 'smart render' included in VS6. So when you are mastering your DVD, try turning OFF the smart render. This will probably lengthen the rendering time, but people using VS8 in particular have run into a similar problem, and this is what they have mostly had to do to get around the sync problem.
Also check, in the burning module page, to see if, under one of the little icons down in the bottom (left?) of screen, there is a little check box with something like 'Do not convert compliant MPEG files' beside it. If there, make sure that this box is checked.
