Installing VideoStudio X7 Pro fails with error -9

I just clean installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on my PC. I then downloaded VideoStudio X7 64bit and tried to install it. All the files were "saved" to a folder in C:\Program Files x86\..., the installer went through the process of installing Visual C++ 2008, Visual Studio 2012 and DirectX and then shortly after stopped with a message something like, Install could not be completed, error code -9, your system has not been modified.

I see someone else had a similar problem with an older version that it seems is something to do with DirectX.

Any ideas?

Try running the installation as Administrator,

The topic on Microsoft Community seems to indicate a problem with Windows 7 installation.

Did you follow the recommendations from that post.

The final paragraph mentions replacing the “mscorwks.dll”
That seemed to work?????

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have the folder that contains mscorwks.dll. There is another answer further down which recommends changing ownership of the C:\windows\logs\cbs folder but has no explanation of why this should be necessary. I have since found another thread on here where a number of users also had problem with either the install or once they finally got the program installed it would not launch.

I would think that the -9 is an error number so should have a description somewhere.

I have clean installed Windows again because of an unrelated problem and I am still getting the same error.

That is undoubtedly correct. But none of us here works for Corel, and so we have no access to any such list of error numbers. The only times we have an idea about an error number is when Corel itself publishes something about a specific error on its Knowledge Base, or else an error number comes up a lot of times and we can work out what it means from the situation causing the error.

Unfortunately, I have not seen anything from Corel about this particular error number.

I assumed you downloaded the 64 bit version, can you download the 32 bit and try to install that?

But I you are having to install windows again for other problems then maybe those are affecting program installations???

I will try the 32bit version although I would be disappointed not to be able to use the 64bit one.

As for the need to re-install, I installed Nero express and after that had some issue that caused the system to become unstable so I decided to just clean install again. I don't think it has anything to do with why VS X7 won't install. I've done almost 20 Win 7 installs this past year as part of my job and as a computer programmer feel quite comfortable doing this kind of work.

I will also try the official support channels. The PC is actually my Dad's which he just had donated to him from a friend of mine to replace his old XP desktop and he used to have Video Studio 10 so he really needs to get something working so he can work with his existing videos.

Your knowledge of Windows operating system is gonna outshine my experiences.

If you have done a clean install of Windows 7 then you would expect the operating system to be squeaky clean.
So why problems with VS and indeed Nero.

If you are having other issues with this pc then I would not think it’s simply the software?

Can you check the graphics drivers with the manufacturers sites to make sure you are using the latest/recommended versions.

I purchased a new Lenovo lap top to find the graphics drivers need updating, that unfortunately took nearly a year to find, but who would look at updating the driver on a new machine?

I think the problem with Nero was that the version (v7) I was installing was pre-Windows 7 and so not compatible. I since found a newer version (v12) from the most recently purchased DVD writer and it installed OK.

I have now managed to get the 32bit version of X7 installed so all is well for now.

Do you know the qualifying procedure for purchasing the update version? Nothing on the website about how it works.

When you say Purchasing the update version,

1/ are you referring to purchasing the Ultimate version
or
2 / upgrading from an earlier version X5 or X6 at a lower price.

Select the link at the top of this forum VideoStudio, the one to the far left of the Menu bar
That page shows both Ultimate and Pro versions.
Click the Learn More link shows a link for Upgrade giving further details and eligibility.

The Ultimate and Pro versions are practically identical as far as editing goes, the Ultimate does come with additional plugins ProDad, Newblue, Boris etc
Most users feel these are worth the extra price

I have been fighting with Videostudio Ultimate x7 for several days trying to get it to install. I think I finally found the solution!!

I tried safe mode install. didn't work.
I tried the cleanup tool. didn't work
I tried uninstalling VSX5. didn't work
on and on and on.

After registering my serial number online, the program finally installed.
