KPT Collection

Post by MikeFromMesa »

I have been testing PSP and, since the download came with the KPT Collection, have been trying to figure out whether or not it is something I want to use. It would be easier to do that if I could figure out how to use it! :D

I have opened raw files (both CR2 and dng) and tiffs and all of the KPT entries have shown as disabled. I have loaded jpgs and some allow use of the collection, others do not. I have looked for documentation on the collection but have not found it, so I am asking here. What types of images have to be loaded for the KPT Collection to be enabled and usable? I am working cross-platform (Mac app calling Windows PSP through Parallels so perhaps that is part of the issue). Most of the filters seem to be a bit unusual so I would also like to know what filters people find usable. The only things I have found in my very limited testing that seem helpful are the noise reduction and sharpening filters.

A second question. I found that OnOne apparently does not make a plugin for PSP so I was looking for some way to define an external editor to call it if I found I needed to use any of the OnOne functionality from PSP. It probably sounds odd to be looking for some way to define an external editor for a pixel editor, but that seems like the only way I could possibly use the OnOne software with PSP. Is there any way to do that?

Thanks.

8-bit RGB images and layers only. Some of the plugins require the layer to have opaque pixels on which to apply the effect; other plugins will work on an empty, transparent layer.

"Unusual" is putting it mildly! Kai Krause (the "Kai" in Kai's Power Tools) was not only a developer of excellent plugins, but also probably the most advanced experimenter in user interface design (and that was years and years ago). Search the Web for his name (or Kai's Power Tools) if you're interested in more information about him and KPT.

The plugins I use the most are:
  • Fluid, for creating swirling backgrounds.
  • Gel, to create metallic objects.
  • Gradient Lab, for "metalizing" image areas.
  • Lens Flare, to add a "starburst" highlight.
  • Lightning, to add...well...lightning strokes.
  • Noize for creating mottled backgrounds.
The KPT Collection installs help files for the plugins, so you ought to start there when learning them and experimenting.

Oh yeah, experiment, play, you'll find some very interesting ways to use these plugins.

Noize, also allows you to do what photoshop calls "render clouds." So if you run across any tutorials that use them it's pretty useful for that. I've seen a number of really interesting tutorials that use "render clouds" to create things.

Also the gradient lab has a brightness matching mode that is similar to Gradient Maps, again found in Photoshop.

They do also have tools similar to the warp tools inside of PSP.

I have KPT installed in PSP X4 on a Win 7 pc. Each plugin has a PDF user file in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X4\Languages\EN\plugins\KPT\metaos\User Guide
I have 24 PDFs there.
