text spacing issue
Hi. I have a text issue.
The spacing (space between letters) is often, for me, random. The font I'm using is Arial, size 13, centered, aliased, vector.
I'll provide an example shortly.
Even the same sentence often gets different spacing when there is more than one instance in the same document.
This issue is kept no matter what image format is exported.
Does anyone else have this issue? For me it's extremely important to find a fix. If I don't, I must transfer a huge project to some other application.

Re: text spacing issue
Sounds like a problem with other text settings - check your leading , kerning and tracking vaues.
Better still reset your text tool to its default.
Presuming you have PSPX6 and have not changed the locations of your Tool Options palette, select the Text tool and over on the left click the down arrow by the Presets and over on the right of the drop down window click the Reset to Default button (second from top).

Re: text spacing issue
Thanks.
I've never tried the Reset to Default button. Will do that now, and report back.

Re: text spacing issue
I tried with larger text, same size text (13).
I tried with changes in Centre and Left justification.
I changed Kerning from auto kern to various values of Kerning.
I could not duplicate your problem at all.
Only difference I noticed was that with left justification the letters seemed sharper and crisper than with centre justification.

I can recreate the problem in X6 and X7 and it affects different letters each time.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

Re: text spacing issue
Thank you both. Feels good to have this one out and about. Have been bugging me for years. (Slight pun.)
hartpaul: Strange and interesting. What do you mean by "I tried with larger text, same size text (13)."? That you tried with various sizes? Also are you running PSP on XP as you profile suggests?
LindaSue: Yes. Different more or less random letters here too. All recent versions of PSP.
I'll report this as bug.

Re: text spacing issue
Yes I tried with larger letters as 13 pixel size letters were a bit small for me to see any spaces clearly.
Do you get it with larger size letters or only at size 13. What about 14 and 12?
Yes my Desktop is still XP.
I test all bugs on that first then try for Win 7.
Do you get a varying contrast / sharpness using left justified v centre justified.
Your sample shows a different spacing between c and e and also between h and l are there any other letter combinations where you get variations.
Have just tested on Win 7 as well.
I typed in wordpad:
Ace Ace Ace
ehle ehle ehle
Copied and then pasted using left justified and centre justified. Still no variation between letters.
You will need to be able to set up a repeatable set of conditions that many people can duplicate before you can call it a bug.
Win 7 on an Intel i5 laptop with Nvidia GE Force GT 525M graphics card.
XP on Intel core i5 desktop with NVidia GeForce GTX 460 graphics card.

Re: text spacing issue
The issue is present with all sizes.
With anti-alias the text is sharper when left aligned, yes. Seems you found another bug there. Without, no.
Issue is present between most, if not all, letter. For instance e and a in the example too.
Same problem with other fonts too. For instance Calibri.
Thanks for the detailed follow up.
Also, the fact that color is the only property that can be applied to multiple text fields is just amazingly sad.

Re: text spacing issue
Just tested the Corel PaintShop Pro X7 SP1 release. Great improvements. Couple of things I was hoping for.
So cool.
Text kerning issue NOT fixed.

Re: text spacing issue
I find this is always been a issue with text that small. 13 is a small amount of pixels to group the letters correctly. Vector will give you the clear clean lines but at this size it also tries to get the best out of the pixels available. Photoshop will have a issue with that sized text.
A workaround is write the text in a larger format, Raster it then size down.
Of cause it's just better to work in a higher resolution while doing the editing then size down to the size you want when done.

Re: text spacing issue
Thanks for your input. Appreciated.
However, I get this problem at all sizes. Simple proof that this is a bug: Enter any text with any font at any size, centered. Move the text with the left and right arrows on the keyboard one step. Re-aranges the kerning every time. Change text to left-align. Move it again. Kerning is perfect.

Tried it all and nothing change that shouldn't have. Antialiasing changed from off, sharp and smooth. No issue showed up.
Sorry can't help.
I'd be interested to see if this issue shows itself in other programs like Notebook, Words, others that use font from your PC collection. (font folder)

Re: text spacing issue
Also I wonder if it might be a problem specific to your system and graphic card. A bug is a bug only if it can be duplicated on many different systems by many people and after eliminating all other sources of interference.
mc_peko : have you tried installing the program on another computer to see if it is prevalent in your version of the program?
So you are saying that if you type those words, (with certain letter combinations- ace, lead etc) text centred, then the words are correct. You apply the text to then get the bounding box and when you click the centre (move) and apply movements using the arrow keys then the letters become disarranged. Does it also become disarranged if you move them with the mouse?
So far you have had only one other person able to duplicate. What is common about your and Linda Sue's systems apart from PSP X7 as at least two others ( DPainter and myself) have not been able to duplicate.

This is a new bit of information different from your original post. Is there anything else that you have left out?mc_peko wrote: Move the text with the left and right arrows on the keyboard one step. Re-aranges the kerning every time. Change text to left-align. Move it again. Kerning is perfect.
