Clips on timeline won't play
I have some clips that will play as a clip, but only show the first frame when added to the timeline. I have spent days trying to work out what is different and the only thing I can see is that the timeline only plays clips with a frame rate of 29.970. The clips that won't play have a frame rate of 30.000. Is this why they won't play? The all work perfectly well in MS Movie Maker!

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
Hi Ken
Welcome to the forums….
I would think its related to the type of video file, the codec used rather than the frame rate. A little more info would help.
Can you tell us which version of Video Studio you are using?
Where did the video come from, a camera, downloaded, converted from another file???
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Create an image of that window to attach to your post.
If you could provide a sample, maybe using “dropbox” then we could try the video on our computers?
You mention 29.97 and 30 fps, if you are in the UK then your program should be installed to use Pal 25 fps.
Make sure the project properties match your video files properties, if that’s possible.
Otherwise make sure the frame rate is the same?

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
When you say it only shows the first clip do you mean like this :-
But you would prefer to see your timeline like this :-
Then that is just a setting in Preferences.
Go to "Settings >> Preferences" and in the dialogue window which opens change the drop down up near the top labelled "clip display mode" to "Thumbnail only"

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. I am using version X6 and have attached a jpg showing the format details of the clip. I have set it up for PAL but even so it will read in any clip showing the NTSC FR of 29.97. The clip was shot on a Trailcam and I have tried both PAL and NTSC formats for recording and they both behave with the same issue regardless. The vendor suggested removing the software and re-installing with the virus checker off. This I tried and it led to all sorts of problems from one of the Codec sites suggested at start-up. After managing to get of the suspected Malware, it all made no difference.
It is not a problem with how it is displayed on the timeline, but rather the cursor on the timeline progresses but the clip is a still and not a "movie"
Regards,
Ken

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
I have done a bit more testing and found that if I add the clip to the timeline and select "clip" for viewing, it plays ok. Am I right to assume that even although it is in the timeline and the cursor is moving, that it is actually playing from the clip folder? If I select "project" to view, I get this situation of a frozen clip, but the cursor is moving throughout the timeline.

Ken

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
I had absolutely no trouble to mix these formats in one project.
VSX7 didn't gave me any indication of error what so ever in placing these clips together and render them to HD MP4.
- I don't know if it's good or bad behavior of VSX7...
(Running on XP extremely smooth)

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
Hi Ken
Playback in clip mode should be playing directly from the files on the hard drive, Project Playback combines all timelines to play the project, that can cause some issues especially with heavy editing.
Video Studio uses a process called Smart Proxy when working with HD files, this creates additional files smoothing playback improves the editing process.
Right click your files and choose Create proxy Files, they may of course be already created.
I would suspect it’s the Lav Codes and the 15fps that is causing some problems.
Many cameras produce good video when played back, but are difficult to edit, the manufacturers would advise that you use a video converter to create a more suitable/ editable format.
Did the camera come with software, installing that may install the correct codecs for the video files?
You say the camera can record using Pal, does that or rather that should use 25 fps
What other options do you have when using the camera.
Are you able to upload a sample to a sharing site, maybe Drop Box, that sample is only 10Mb, so if you wish to e-mail I can send my address
Otherwise post the camera to me and I will test in on my hedgehog

Sorry I missed your last reply.
Yes you can mix those videos and VS should cope with them, not sure what the quality is gonna be like.
Your final output can only use one frame rate, if that's Pal25 fps then all other rates will be changed to use 25, the 59.9 fps will effectively lose over 50% to use 25 fps and that will impact on quality.
The 29 .97 Ntsc will lose 5 frames per second, chances are you will see pulsing of the video especially when panning.

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
Hi Lata,
There was no software with the camera and I used other file conversion tools to try and create different file properties. I never tried to edit the clips, so they were still in their original form. The trial cam doesn't give many option other than PAL/NTSC and video quality 1080p etc. The VSX7 post did not come from me and seems to be a different subject. The file is too large to post, so grateful if I can email sample to you.
Regards,
Ken

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
How large is the file if you say it is too large to post? We don't mean posting in this forum but to a free website such as Dropbox.
Also what do you mean by "The VSX7 post did not come from me and seems to be a different subject"?

Re: Clips on timeline won't play
I tried two things. 1) I changed the framerate of the clip using another editing software to 25 fps and included this in the project and it worked. I tried changing the project framerate to 30 fps and used the original 30 fps clip and it made no difference. So my conclusion is that X6 does not handle 30 fps clips correctly.
Thanks for your help,
Ken
