Braided leather cord

Post by gluepack »

Is there any way that I can produce something that will enable me to "draw" a braided leather cord where the pattern follows the line of the cord as, for example, here...

Hmmm... I don't think a Picture Tube will get you what you want. You will not be able to draw that braid around curves abnd sweeps as the Tube moves over the Workspace. . . .. Maybe a "Texture" being used this way?

Oh! Duh! Thanks for that. I didn't know that picture tube even existed. On the face of it, having now tried several stock tubes that I have downloaded, it is possible that it would work. It will require a bit of thought and I will play around with it to see what sort of result I can get. I would have thought that a texture was less likely to work.
Thanks again.

OK, I have tried it out. Of course the problem is that the element(s) of the tube have to be large enough to present the braid but, although the path they take curves, the actual elements don't curve, they step, so the larger the element the more obvious the steps.

So, anyway, having created my length of braided cord, either as a single piece from an image or by merging several pieces or by creating a straight length by picture tube, I can select the object that I have created. Then, is there any way to add nodes and manipulate them to curve the object?

I think there is als a thing called Directional Picture tubes which change as the direction changes.

Thanks.

None of the Cassel items are suitable for what I want to do. However, they do have some interesting things that I have bought.

They refer to a script that you can use to refine the output http://pixelnook.vapho.com/VectorTube.htm. I downloaded it but was unable to get it to do anything. However, it is more than 10 years old and I am using 64 bit X6, which may at least contribute to the problem.

I joined Scrapbook Campus, expecting to be able to see the Tubes master class but, unfortunately, it looks as if you can only see the current one for free so I will have to purchase that in order to see it.

Having looked at the files, I understand the technique generally but to generate my own will probably take more time than it is worth.

I was able to create reasonable output, quite simply, some time ago, using an old version of AI. I was hoping that by now the technology had improved and that I could do a better job, more easily, with PSP.

Gluepack. shoot me an email at cassel AT creationcassel DOT com.
The Vector Tube script works fine in all version, but there is one step that is often skipped in its use (i used to skip that step and then pull my hair).

I can also try to make a tube for your need if you want. Again, send me an email and we can talk about exactly what it is that you need.

OK, have emailed you but, just for the record, the script is working now. Having tried several times re-loading PSPX6 both 32 & 64 bit, the only difference now, as far as I can tell, is that I have re-booted the Win 7 system meanwhile.
Thanks!

I didn't get your email :(

The issue with the script is often that the path has to be "converted to a path" (even if it is already a path... yeah, silly)

Sent it to cassel AT creationcassel DOT com as specified. Sent at 20:14 UTC.

As far as the path is concerned, I didn't do anything different. I drew a line with pen then ran the script. As I said, the only thing really that occurred meanwhile was that the system was re-booted.

Yes, the path might or might not need to be "converted" depending on what tool you used.
For the email, did you replace the AT by @ and the DOT by . ?
