I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
I try to install to E:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 Setup Files and I get the following message "The path to the installation directory for Corel Video Studio Pro x6 is limited to a maximum of 100 characters. Please select a different destination". -Well I count 65 characters including spaces so........
I've a new desktop - AMD FX8320 32gig - A 256gig SSD drive for C and a 1 terabyte SSD for E - No way I'll buy til' I try and if the trial is duff well......
Anyone got any thoughts?
Reason I'm giving it a go is I've been very impressed with Aftershot Pro II

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
I am slightly puzzled - if you have only just downloaded the free trial why is there all this mention of X6 - the latest trial is X7
Also when you installed the trial after it had unpacked the set-up files the programme should have continued to install - did you stop it
and are you running the setup.exe file in that folder - I note you have used an 'E' drive - while this should be possible several users have in the past reported problems when not using the default 'C' drive

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Brian, checking back, and to avoid your confusion, I downloaded the free trial yesterday, a combination package that includes Paintshop Pro x6 and Video Studio Pro x6 which they call Photo Video Suite x6 so.....
It did not continue to install but left me with an extracted folder in Downloads. Paintshop Pro x6 installed perfectly to E drive. Then came Video Studio Pro x6 - I clicked on set up and it started to set up and that's where I came in....
If it won't install to E drive I don't want it. My C drive is only 256gigs and is reserved for windows.
It has occurred to me that Video Studio Pro x7 might work where x6 didn't so I've just been to download the x7 trial. I was offered a choice of 64 or 32 bit - I'm running a 64 bit desktop and with the x6 download I wasn't offered a choice - maybe that was the problem? I'll wait and see.

Just tried to install Video Pro x7 - exactly the same message - "The path to the installation directory for Corel Video Studio Pro x7 is limited to a maximum of 100 characters. Please select a different destination" - completely daft!

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Hi
Certainly I do not know why you are having problems, I always install to the C: Drive, without problems.
Video Studio does create several folders during the installation, not all in program files, some in Program Data and others in My Documents.
I don’t think you will get a complete installation with all files to E Drive?
Can you ask the question on Corel’s Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/Corel/?itrkid=Footer_Social_FB
As far as I know that is staffed by Corel employees who should be able to pass you onto their technical section.
By the way does the error occur during the initial file extraction for set-up files, or after when starting the actual installation.

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Installing to a non-C drive
I NEVER install software applications or related data to C:\ drive if there is any option to do otherwise (some installers don't give options - they just blast it onto C:). And I have never had any problems doing that, for any beta software, full release versions and trials. For Corel, that includes VS versions 11+, X5,X6,X7 and Paintshop X6. I have all of them installed in separate folders on a drive that does not store the OS. Naming conventions apply to assist that, but the Corel software by default does that.
Microsoft long ago admitted their Everything on C: drive strategy of the windows 95 time-frame or earlier was a mistake: huge performance penalties, many management issues esp related to the registry and version control, installation or un-installation of software and the cross-package impacts of that etc. That approach makes the C:\ just an enormous bit bucket: no administration of any competence puts every record they have, will have or have ever had in the same drawer of a filing cabinet - but that's what the default c:\drive strategy is. But the horse had bolted and living with it was the only realistic option. However, there are ways to minimise the consequences.
If you can, to minimise the penalties, particularly access times (even with large v fast hard drives, they are still significant) arrange it like this:
1 put the Windows OS in one physical drive,
2 install the applications software on a separate physical drive; and
3 put the related applications data in another separate (from the OS and the application) physical drive or failing that a separate logical drive or folder on the applications drive. Just the latter enables you manage version control of, and remove, outdated applications without bombing the data that later versions of that or other software might/almost certainly also use.
On a single drive laptop/notebook, clearly the physical benefits won't be there - the access time issues will be the same as the "everything on c:\drive" case, but the management of programs and data is still much better. Consider it as a single filing cabinet with the OS in one drawer, applications in another and data in a third. An externally attached hard drive can improve performance by restoring much of the benefit a separate drive for programs and data provides.

David, I'm also hold this type of HDD management for many years.
Not as much as separate disks but separate partitions indeed.

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Hi Guys
I have never installed the program to any other drive than C, maybe I am a little naive and trust the software manufacturers default locations. Next time I re-install I will give it a run to see whats actually involved…
But a question.
If I install to say D Drive, that’s a separate internal disc drive not just a partition of C
There are many files installed by Video Studio in several locations on the C drive.
Where are they installed when using D Drive?
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X7 (Main Program)
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64) (user Interface details)
C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads (saved from Corel Guide)
C:\ProgramData\Corel\Messages (saved from Corel Guide)
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\My Projects (Default VSP location)
C:\Users\Trevor\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\17.0 ( Create DVD temp folders) + Favourites)
I am sure there are other locations that are used????
Video Studio also installs SmartSound as part of the program
Where do they get installed?

Hi - No, I posted the problem on the Facebook Corel support page - they told me someone would be in touch then nothing so......... presume it's an insoluble problem. I ended up buying Photoshop Elements 11 & Elements Premiere. 11 works well with my Perfect Photo Suite 8. Disappointed but never mind - thank you for taking an interest.lata wrote:Hi glenans

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Hi
Glenans
I’m a little confused as to when you are seeing this error……….
The download Trial file is called
VSX7_Pro_TBYB_x64.exe or VSX7_Pro_TBYB.exe depending on 64bit or 32 bit versions.
When we run this file we are allowed to choose a Location to save Files, From the same window deselect “Launch Installation when Save is Complete”
Setup files are then extracted to your chosen folder/drive.
You seem to indicate using E:\Program Files (x86) folder to hold these files, why Program Files?
If you use E: they would save to E:\Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 Setup Files
Do you get that far, to extract the installation files.
The 64 bit files are 1.74Gb with the 32 bit being 1.8 Gb (from Windows Explorer properties)
You can now run the program installation from these files, (Double click Setup .exe) and if you wish after installation the Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 Setup Files folder can be deleted.

Re: I've downloaded the free trial but can't install it
Greetings!
I'm new here ... registered so I may help with this installation issue based on my own experience this evening.
I have just upgraded my HDD to a SSD and have a second SSD data drive, as well as installed programs on a third 2Tb HDD.
Without going into why is considered best to use a mechanical drive for software that does a lot of writes, and the obvious space difference, I also got the error.
To answer the question of when, that was asked.... the error appears when the setup files are being installed onto the newly chosen drive, not during actual installation of the software.
In my case, reinstalling a paid version of X7 ultimate setup files, and also the bonus files setup gave the error and this is what my problem was.
When you open the dialog to choose the new drive, it actually added the path a second time:
X:\ Program Files (86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate x7 Setup Files\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate x7 Setup Files
Since windows uses every char in the name-path down to the last file in the last folder ... using the full name (Corel VideoStudio Ultimate x7) alone is too long imo, but double it and those chars go fast.
But when I cut it out of the little dialog box and closed it.... it put it back.
When I opened it again, it was chosen already and repeated adding it back.
I cancelled the install and closed installer .... then assured no folder or files were left over.
Created the folder myself under the drive I wanted .... Program Files (86)\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate x7 Setup.
Then I started the installer again, and used the dialog to go to that folder and choose it .... and it finished without error.
Had to do the same thing with the Bonus Setup files, and put them in the same folder.
The setup finished and works great now.
I don't use corel very much.... only for fast cuts etc, the rest of the time I use CS6 ... but I did test multiple features pretty good before posting here.
Again, doubling that long name was just too many characters in the end.
I hope that's clear enough and that it helps you guys that stumble on the problem down the road also.
