Error deleting files

Post by coolrat »

Until recently, I was using Aftershot Pro 1 only as a 'light table' for examining and comparing files for deletion.

Two days ago, however, a problem cropped up-- whenever I try to delete a file, a message pops up saying "Error deleting file". The file appears to disappear, but when I restart Aftershot Pro, the file is still there.

In an attempt to fix this, I deleted my catalogue and started again. This had no effect on remedying the error. I then uninstalled Aftershot Pro 1, rebooted and reinstalled it. Still the problem exists. I then installed Aftershot Pro 2.0 trial version, but I'm getting the same error.
Does anyone have any suggestions on why I am encountering this error? My photos are located on an external RAID 1 (striped) drive (Hitachi G-RAID) that are backed up daily onto another drive. My computer is a Thinkpad W520 with i7 processor and 16 gigs RAM.

PS. Another two questions:
I had long since given up using it as a RAW editor in favor of PhotoNinja (Now I'm thinking of switching entirely to Darktable if I can convince myself that is performance is similar to PhotoNinja).
1) how does Aftershot 2 compare to PhotoNinja?
2) can Darktable yield results as good as or better than Photoninja?

Darktable does not hold a candle against PN when it comes to IQ...
And AS2 can't compete either.
Unfortunately, the Picturecode guys have no clue about an efficient workflow ;-(

I would check the permissions of the problematic file and the directory it resides in.

Thanks AFX for your reply.

Yes, that's what I was guessing. I've been quite satisfied with PhotoNinja's results. Yet I was hoping that an open source program might be the magic solution to my efforts to avoid proprietary software. You're right, PN's workflow is not very smooth. With PN, its default settings are quite good and it only takes a few seconds to adjust each photo (I found fewer adjustments were necessary yield good results than when using DXO Optics 8 or Aftershot 1). But its very slow in opening and rendering RAW files. And its browser for examining photos is really rudimentary.

The solution then seems to be to use IMatch5 for examining and cataloging photos and PhotoNinja as my RAW editor. I will still occasionally use Aftershot Pro. For me, they really "dropped the ball" many months ago. ASP2 was not enough, too late, though I do really like the layout, workflow and speed!

Regarding file permissions- I'm having trouble figuring this out. What should the permissions be?
On the external drive in question, I checked Windows's Explorers' -- Properties -- Security -- Edit (it says I have all permissions).
When i check -- Properties -- Security -- Advanced -- Permissions -- it reports

"Allow Everyone Full Control not inherited This folder, subfolders

Am I missing something? Do I need to change something in the permissions?

Who is the owner of the files and what are the permissions for the owner? It should be full control for the owner.

I both agree with AFX and would add that, a) as the files are on an external drive and b) they might have been downloaded there with another software (not with ASP), then it is for sure a problem of ownership.
You must set the current user as the owner of the parent directory and all its children recursively.
Windows : right click the parent directory, click Properties, Security, Advanced settings, Owner, then select the user you want to become the owner of the folder, check "Replace the subfolders..." and then OK.
Linux : sudo chown -R [username who will become the new owner] [folder]
However, be aware that if you use the drive on two different OSes (DT is Linux only, and I think you're running ASP on Windows), this will happen again with the other software when you switch the drive back.

J.-L.
