Easy way to move pictures from one catalog to another?

Hello everyone - got a newb question.
Is there an easy way to move pictures/folders from one catalog to another?
For example, I have a 2014 catalog, and I want to move some folders (with images in them) to a catalog which I will create on an external HD to free up some space on my laptop. Moving the pictures physically would also be required (and hopefully automatic!)
I'm on Linux, so I may mount the external catalog via sshfs or something, but that's another topic.
