I had a new 3 minute video project hand during the rendering phase. Based on searching the web it appears that if one of my 3 input video files had a bad "frame" that the render could hang.
Is there an easy way to scan a video to see if there is a bad frame?
Here's some backgraound:
A few month ago I completed a project where I rendered 20 different files with no problem. The input came from the same camera that I am having the render problems.
Two days ago I tried to render a simple project: 3 minutes long with one main video & two overlay videos. All three videos were shot with the same camera (which was used in the project I did 2 months ago).
I ran the render 4-5 times, rendering to another file "same resolution as first video option" and rendering to an iso. Each of the renders hangs Visual studio.
I re-booted my computer turned off all virus scans & backups & re-ran the render with the same hanging issue.
The last time I ran it I opened the task manager "processes" window. I observed the Visual Studio process using between 60% and 80% of the cpus. Than after a few minutes the usage dropped to 0% and Visual Studio became non responsive.
After the last hang I re-ran one of the renders from 2 months ago & it rendered fine.
The project that has the render problem is a simple 3 video (all shot with the same camera at same settings) project, no titles and only one transition, a fade to black at the end. I used the color correction for one of the input files.

Re: Render hangs in VS 5 : How can I find bad video file
I would render each of the 3 source files (unedited) by itself to a video file. That should tell you if there is a problem with any of the source files and which one.
If there is no problem then create a project with only those 3 source files without any edits or mods.
If still no problem then add your edits but only make changes one at a time until you discover which edit causes the problem

Re: Render hangs in VS 5 : How can I find bad video file
I was able to render each of my 3 source video files without VS hanging. However, I fixed my problem. When my original "render to file" hung it produced a partial video output file. I located the transition near the end of the partial file. I then adjusted by 2 seconds the cut that corresponded to the end of the partial file in my original project. I was then able to render my original project to a file & then create a DVD from the rendered file.
So, adjusting one edit "fixed" my render problem.
