RAW image processing

Post by AnnieMaca »

HI All
I am currently using PSP14 with windows 7. I have also started shooting photos in RAW format which means I am learning to use the RAW processor in PSP14. I have a problem which seems to be a software issue. The photo in camera appears fine, then when I click to open the RAW image in PSP14 the RAW lab opens and the image appears fine in the thumbnail section at the bottom of the RAW lab however the image in the large editing section of the RAW lab has a problem in the corners. Each corner now shows a black/dark blue curve in each corner! It is almost as though the inside of the lens is showing. I have tried uploading the same photo on a friends laptop into a different piece of software and the corners were fine, therefore I can only assume it is PSP14 or myself that is doing something wrong.

Any adivce?
Thanks

PSP's RAW image processing is very basic. If you just need to process a one off image every once in a while and you're already in PSP then it can work for that. However the general advice is to not use PSP for RAW processing. It's just too cumbersome. Corel has ASP if you need a full time RAW editor. There's also a myriad of editors from other manufacturers.

Different RAW processors use different algorithms to process images, and different codecs to display them. What you described is the inside of your lens, as I've seen this before in some programs that display and process a larger area that some don't. That not being visible on your friend's laptop is due to Windows using a different codec to display the image than PSP. If your image isn't severely faded, PSP may support the camera you are using- check Corel's list of supported cameras for the version of PSP that you have. So, you will need to crop your image to remove the unwanted elements.

Personally, I only use PSP's Raw processor for quick views, and since I shoot a lot of RAW, I've tried several free and trial versions of commercial RAW processors. After I process my RAW image in another program, I then do some finer editing with the exported tiff in PSP. I'm sure if you do some searching on RAW programs you will find something that suits you.

I believe PSP is an excellent raw developer of quality. In fact, I've written an article on how to use it for raw, for a beginner who already owns PSP and wants to explore without spending a bunch of money, it is ideal. Should you buy something else? Perhaps, in time. But by using PSP X6 for raw, you can develop not only your raw photos, you can develop an idea of what it is you like and dislike in a raw developer.

If you have a Canon camera then start with the Canon software. It is easily as good as PSP and you have already paid for it.
