I've somehow lost the very good twain interface I used to have for my Canon PIXMA MP540 with Corel PaintShop Pro X6 64 bit.
I've tried for months to find it. I do not remember the name of it, or where I got it from.
I must now use
File | Import | Import From Scanner or Camera
insted of
File | Import | TWAIN Acquire
.
This means also that the Scan Image button doesn't work.
This is driving me crazy.
I'm stuck with this horrible thing:
lost the twain interface

Re: lost the twain interface
There are lots of posts on this problem. Photoshop also has this issue.
Just as with Photoshop - TWAIN is only available for the 32-bit version of PSP.
To work with 64-bit software, you need 64-bit drivers. Not every driver that is for 64-bit Windows compatible is a 64-bit driver. This is confusing for most. But I don't currently know of a scanner that has actual 64-bit drivers. Not saying there isn't one, but most are not actually 64-bit drivers. They are only 64-bit compatible. So even if it did work there is no guarantee that your scanner would have worked with it. Of course the reason it doesn't work isn't understood, some think 64-bit TWAIN is unavailable on Windows period.
However, I don't know as that is true. And I do think that the 64-bit PSP is just not able to see 64-bit TWAIN.
Why?
The TWAIN organization (the people responsible for the TWAIN standard) has a test utility called Twacker that if installed can see all available 64-bit drivers. Use of this tool can tell you if your scanner driver is available to 64-bit TWAIN. I know this tool works because of the software, VueScan. VueScan includes 64-bit TWAIN drivers that Twacker 64 will see.
If you don't mind spending extra money you can buy the program VueScan. VueScan works as an interface for most scanners. And includes an import plugin that works as a replacement for 64-bit TWAIN.
Photoshop dropped TWAIN completely in its 64-bit version. So people use VueScan's plugin to bridge the gap between the program, the vuescan software, and the scanner.

Re: lost the twain interface
That is an awesome, detailed, pro, swift and informative answer. Super thanks.
I didn't know Photoshop had dropped TWAIN, nor had I heard of VueScan. Very interesting. I've never even thought about the possibility of a dedicated scanning application. I'll check it out right away.
I'm almost sure I had the good TWAIN interfaced working with the 64 bit PSP, but not entirely, so that might indeed be the problem.

Re: lost the twain interface
Wow. VueScan hooked the scanner to PSP just like that. The interface and functionality is as good or better than the one I had and loved.
I didn't get the scan function to work from within PSP yet though, but I can live without that button working.

Re: lost the twain interface
I have a related problem you may shed light on. Until about three weeks ago I had a smooth running Twain connection between PSP 8 on an old 32-bit Windows Vista PC an my equally antiqauted Canon CanoScan 8000F. The 'Twain acquire' function worked properly, but then after a decade and a half of loyal service my 8000F died on me. I bought a new CanonScan 9000F MarkII, and since then I have not been able to get that function working again. That is, on that 32-bit Vista PC. I tried it on a laptop running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and there the same PSP8 'Twain acquire' function works, opens Canon's ScanGear CS and I can use all the functionality there. On the 32-bit Vista PC I get an error which translates (my installation is in Dutch) as
"There is no communication possible with the scanner. Maybe the cable is not connected properly. Check the status. The scanner driver is being closed."
I do not even have the possibility to use the File/Import/From Scanner or Camera... option, as though that horrible screen shows up and even the preview works, the actual scanning fails with the message
"an error has occured while trying to write to the file"
Oddly enough, where PSP8 to CanoScan communication seems to be failing, the other way roud it kind of works. I can start ScanGear CS separately and scan an image, and have that sent to or opened in PSP8. That works fine, up to a point. I can scan up to 12 images in one run on the CanoScan. If I select multiple images for scanning (when scanning old photo negatives that is more the rule than the exception), only the first one actually ends up opened in PSP. That simply does not work for me.
Is there any way to get the Twain connection between my new CanoScan 9000F Mark II and old PSP8 on a 32-bit Windows Vista PC working again?
