Video Studio X7 will not play entire clip

Post by kaylyred »

I apologize if this question has been asked before - I searched and didn't find an answer to the exact problem I'm having.

I'm new to editing in VS X7. I've created about 6 weekly videos to date using the software. I'm not very fluent in video editing terminology yet, so please bear with me.

I'm having a problem with getting the video clips I import to play in their entirety. (This happens with an occasional clip, though not all of them.) Although it will look as though the full-length clip is displayed on the video track, when I begin to trim or multi-trim the clip only a small portion of it will play. I've checked to make sure that the scrubber is positioned to play the full clip, but this doesn't seem to make a difference. So far, the only solution I have found is to edit the clip in Windows Live Movie Maker and then import it again, at which point it plays in its entirety. (Obviously, this isn't an ideal solution.)

I've encountered this problem several times so far in my editing, and it slows down the process. It's maddening! I appreciate any help.

I don't really understand what you mean by "when I begin to trim or multi-trim the clip only a small portion of it will play. I've checked to make sure that the scrubber is positioned to play the full clip, but this doesn't seem to make a difference."

Please explain exactly (step-by-step) how you are doing the trim and then the playback. I never use the multi-trim as I find it too cumbersome especially when trying to remove several sections of a clip. I prefer to use simple splits for the start and end of the segment to be deleted, then I select the segment to be deleted and hit delete. Then I move on to the next segment to be removed and repeat the process.

What I described really is the step-by-step. I import a clip, drag it to the video track, and when I begin to trim the clip only a portion of the clip will play. The entire clip seems to appear on the video track, but will not play through in its entirety. For instance, say that I imported a clip 1:30 in length. The full 1:30 clip bar appears on the video track, but (and this is an arbitrary example) only the first 28 seconds will play through - the clip simply stops playing.

I've used both methods. When I have this problem with clips cutting out before they finish play-through, it doesn't seem to matter which trimming method I use, I still have the issue.

For what it's worth, the original video format I'm attempting to import is .mp4, generated by Nvidia's game video recorder, Shadowplay . I can import the exact same clips into Windows Live Movie Maker, render and save them as a .wmv, and import it back into Video Studio, and then the clip will play through from beginning to end.

Sounds like the clip format is not fully compatible with videostudio, so converting it is the way to move forward.
Have you got the latest directx and graphics card drivers from it's manufacturer installed?

I had the same problem after it working for many months. I tried all sorts of things to get it to play the videos, even increased my RAM. I recently found if you change the video speed from 100% to 99% it works.
Give that a try

Hi

Are your project properties set to match your video files properties?

Can you provide full details of your video files properties, I would suspect the frame rate to be lower than standard?

I have to agree with Graham that you may have to convert the file to a more editable format. Some formats work quite well for playback but not for editing.
Yes I can see the logic in changing the speed if the frame rates don't match??????
