Issues with creating a smart proxy of .avi files

Post by Lukripar »

Hello!

I'm working on making multiple videos from media that I have captured on my computer using screen capturing software, specifically Bandicam.

When I edit the video it lags terribly in the preview window so I have been trying all day to make a smart proxy of the video. However, no matter how I configure the smart proxy settings, it doesnt work.

What specifically happens is: I right click on the clip that I would like to proxy, then I click "Create Smart Proxy File..." and I immediately check the smart proxy que to check if it worked and there is nothing in the que. No matter how many times I tell it to create the proxy, it just cant do it. Is VS unable to create a smart proxy using a .avi video? I used a video converter to change it into a .mp4 format and was then able to create the proxy, however I would rather not do this every time as this doubles the amount of time it takes for me to edit the video because I have to render it in order to place it in VS and then render it again once the editing is finished. Based on the fact that I was able to make the proxy once I changed the format, I am assuming it is a codec issue. It seems like VS is unable to create a proxy from whatever codec was used to create my .avi file. Any Help?

Codecs I use to record:
VIDEO: H.264 - NVENC (VBR)/Full Size, 30.00fps, 80q (I've tried recording with several other codecs as well and it still acts the same way when creating/not creating the proxy)
Audio: MPEG-1 L2 48.0Hz, stereo, 192kbps

Does the Bandicam program produce the .avi? And since there are over 800 different formats which use the .avi extension, we need to narrow things down a bit more. So please right click on one of the .avi files in the Video Studio timeline or library windows and copy all its Properties here -- or take a screen shot of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment.

SmartProxy is essentially made for high definition video. It creates, as you probably know, a standard definition copy of the original. You edit the proxy and then, when satisfied, the edits are applied back to the original. But there is little point in trying to make a proxy file if your original video is already standard definition. There is possibly another reason why it is lagging so badly...

Hi

To add to Kens reply, Smart Proxy files are created for video having a frame size larger than 720 x 576 /480, default setting for standard definition sizes.
View (F6) Preferences - Performance tab – Create proxy files when ………….

What is the size of your video?
