Large outdoor green screen

Post by zoobie »

I've been looking around for something cheap to tack to an outdoor wall that's in the sun. Size needs to be about 8 feet tall and at least 20 feet wide. I was wondering if a tablecloth, bedsheets, or some sort of tarp would work. What do you recommend?

Plenty of greenscreen material available on the internet.

The idea might sound good but there can be problems. First the screen needs to be perfectly flat so there are no creases and no variation in contrast. Second the sun will, if it is not directly facing the subject, produce shadows visible to the camera. This will ruin the greenscreen effect. Your filming will be reduced to a small window of opportunity when the sun is directly in front of the wall. I use a light positioned on the same axis as the camera or in any situation where the available light produces no shadow.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Adding to the above, a matt finish is best and using at least 3 point lighting and lighting the green background will make life much more easy in the editing room.

I've noticed how the sun behaves at various times of the day...especially at noon when the sun's almost straight above but lighting a wall nicely without shadows.
However, I'm still considering setting up a green screen outdoors.

for the size your looking at I think I would be putting up 5 sheets of 8ft x 4ft plywood stood vertically next to each other - that's a big piece of floppy material like tablecloth or tarp to stretch tight enough to avoid folds or droops.

I'm wondering how smooth the natural wall's texture has to be in order to avoid any teeny shadows like in between bricks.
Perhaps a few test shots are in order.

Actually, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a completely blank wall with the dimensions I need and, in my case, a sidewalk to boot.
Most are two-toned at best.
Test shots most definitely needed.
