X6 - DVD Projekt 4:3 => 16:9 and HD Video ?

Post by brandelh »

Hi,

I have made a DVD with 720x576 with 4:3, but now we have a 16:9 TV, and I try to ...

1. make a new VSP file with "720x576" and 16:9 ... but without streching the text or pictures
2. make a new VSP file with Full HD Blueray Disk.

I have switched on the 16:9 in the Menu, but this changes nothing.
I have changed the settings while rendering, but the 16:9 is streched ... and I see nothing changed in the workarea ...
I have searched here, but I could not find the right "search words in english" :-(

Is there a way to change the project settings for the new VSP files or transfer them (about 13 to 26 per video disk) ?

Your never going to be able to make a 4:3 video fit a 16:9 screen without some stretching - think of 4:3 as a box and then make it wider - something has to stretch.

There are ways around it - one is to start a 16:9 project and put a 16:9 colour block in the top track to fill the screen and then put your 4:3 video in the overlay track and adjust the size to fit to top to bottom - that way you get the video at 4:3 with coloured bars each side filling the screen.

You could crop your video to 16:9 but you will lose some of the top and/or the bottom of the picture.

Another way is to start a 16:9 project and put your video in the top track and stretch it to fit side to side - then put the video again into the overlay track and keep that at 4:3 - which will give you an effect like this :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJf4hpKctj0

Hi

Yes you can convert 4:3 to 16:9……………

But as Brian says you will lose some detail top and bottom if you convert 4:3 to 16:9

When you say “... but without stretching the text or pictures” I assume you mean distorting the text….

If you do want a full screen then viewing this web page will give you an idea as to what can be achieved, the page is a little old, created using VS10 and 12 but still relevant for later versions.

Brian’s YouTube sample works very well, I certainly would adopt that format.
Also works for Slide Shows where images do not fill the screen etc.

I may have to explain, that I know that I will have cuted sides, the thing is, that the view video sources are in 16:9 format and the pictures 4:3 have about 4000x3000 pixels.
So I have enough info in the source, but thought I can just transform into a 16:9 project and then just fix some pictures with text titles.

The TEXT is not inside the bitmap of the picture, but defined in VS as a title track.

There are many pictures inside a projekt and I thought I can do it without starting total new. But HOW to do that ?

Thanks for the links, I will see them now ;-)

Hi

Ok I think I understand, I thought you were referring to a video file?

First open the project and File - Save As- give it a new name, just as a copy so if things do not work you can revert to the original project.
You may be best to create a Smart Package, that will copy all clips used in the project along with a new VSP file, saving them to a new folder.

You have a widescreen project using images 4000 x 3000px, I assume landscape view.

Some options
1 / if the images are in the top track,

Double click an image to open options panel (below library)
Attributes Tab – choose distort
Image shows yellow re-size handles
Right click image in preview screen for (fit to Screen)
Right click image in preview screen for (Keep aspect ratio)
Image is resized to fit screen in proportion
If you wish nudge the image up/down using the keyboard arrow keys, maybe you need to see more of the top?

The above has set one image.
Right click same image in timeline – Choose Copy Attributes
Right click another image to Paste Attributes, that image fills the screen
If the images are next to each other you can select more than one by using Shift + Click, all image swill be set to 16:9

Images in the Overlay Track use the same as above, but distort is already set

Otherwise………..

Use a third party image editor to crop the images to 16:9, save them with the same name. When you open the project you will get a re-link request, browse to find the new image. All should relink and fill the screen.

thanks, I will try it.

By the way, is the version 17 much better than 16 on a modern pc ?

I do have a i5-4670 with Win7 64 and 16 GB RAM.
