PLAY on "Project" and vision freezes after 3 seconds

I have just re-installed X5 (from download) and the first project I am doing is freezing. Sound continues but vision freezes after 3 seconds in each clip.
If I play "Clip" there is no freeze of vision. Only when I click "Project". If I scan forward to another clip and press play, it plays fine for 3 seconds, then vision freezes. There is also no sound in "Project" but there is in "Clip".
I am filming with a Canon X10 and I transfer the HD to SD on card B as suggested in camera manual. Corel X5 doesn't like HD and I have never been able to load full HD shots into it, hence the downgrade. Quality on SD is fine for my purposes anyway.
When I first bought X5, the picture would freeze and judder through on long shots, but would usually fix up fairly well in burning to DVD. There was a fix for that problem.
This one is similar, but different, as in CLIP mode it all works fine. It just freezes with no sound at all, in PROJECT mode.
Very Frustrating!
I had to download X5 again as I got an error message in the old setup, saying that something (can't remember what) was missing or corrupt. So I uninstalled the old one and downloaded X5 again from the website.
I recently installed Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on my Mac laptop, so thought I should put it on my PC as well to learn it. However it shows a blank screen with sound when I try to play HD shots, so I uninstalled it.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with a 2TB hard drive and 8GB RAM.
Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Clarification needed. In first line I say that sound continues. Sorry, NO sound in "Project" but yes in "Clip".

Having installed Vs X5 have you applied all service patches provided by Corel.?

Video Studio uses a process called Smart Proxy, this creates additional files that improve playback when editing HD files.

Have you activated Smart Proxy, if so have Smart Proxy files been created.

I don’t understand what type of video files you are using a bit of a confusion with the reference to Sd
Can you right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

You can create an image of that window to attach to your post, attachment options at bottom of post

I re-installed SP1 & 2 and I now have sound on "Project" but vision still hangs at 3 secs in,on each clip.
I have clicked on Proxy in the dropdown list, sp presumably it is using it.
The attributes for the scenes are: (sample is first scene)
PAL DVD
Filesize 12992KB
Duration 12.48 secs
Video
MPEG2 upper field first
312 farmes
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9 aspect
25 fps
Data rate 9200 kbps
Audio:
48000 Hz
256 bit rate.

Hope you can solve this riddle.

My Canon XA10 refers to HD and SD (High definition and Standard Definition.) I have to transfer the HD files in-camera to SD on the card, to download the scenes. Neither Corel nor Adobe like the HD files apparently.
Which negates part of the reason for buying such an excellent camera! Although for my use the Canon's SD pictures are superb.

Hi Rob

Those properties look ok to me standard Pal DVD, you should not be having trouble using those files.

Smart Proxy files only work for HD, the criteria for creating a proxy file is the frame size being greater than 720 x 576 (Pal)
Your Mpeg2 files should not require Smart Proxy.

I don’t know if you have set this but ……………

Go to Preferences F6
General tab – set “Show Messages when inserting First clip to Timeline”
Start a new project
Add some of your SD mpeg2 files, a window will open prompting you to match the project settings. If you wish view the detail tab, then press Yes.

Your project properties now match the video file.

Does that improve playback.

Have done all that now.
The box was already ticked on "Show Messages".
When I inserted some of the files into a NEW PROJECT an box asked me if I wanted to match the files so it could use SMART RENDERING, I clicked yes, then tried to run the project but it froze vision again while the sound continued.
Any other ideas?

Can you upload a sample mpeg2 file to a sharing site, maybe Microsoft One Drive or Dropbox.
We can download and try on our systems, at least it will prove if it’s the video or your program.

As I say the SD Mpeg2 looks ok.

Do you have a sample HD that we can try, you seem to be having problems with those.

Download the trial of X7 to see if you can edit using the newer program.

I found the MTS file to be ok whilst the MPG file paused video at 3 seconds whilst the audio played on (Project Playback)
Clip Playback was ok?

I converted the MTS to SD Mpeg2, that new video plays ok?

MTS sample 10Mb

MPG Sample 12Mb

Converted MTS to MPG 11Mb

Hi Rob

If you wish to convert the MTS to Mpeg2 you can use File - Batch Convert
You have to manually set the conversion properties, however batch convert should use the Project Properties set for Mpeg.

Try this

1 / Start a new Project
2 / Add the Converted from MTS .mpg to timeline, say yes to the Match Video Properties.
3 / File – Batch Convert
4 / Add your MTS files, try a few to start with
5 / Set the Save location.
6 / Save as Type to MPEG files
The details in the lower panel should be :-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps

7 / Press Options and you can modify / set the convert properties.
8 / Press Convert.
