newish toPSP, is this normal? (Includes video of problem)

Post by random-E-o »

When ever i describe this problem they always say "It's your specs" So ill start off with my specs.

i7 4ghz (Stable)
Ram: 6Gb
GPU: GTx 580

I bought PSPx6 about 2 weeks ago and I am on the verge of giving up using it :(. I chose to go with PSP as I used to use x3 and loved it. However, i am having a problem and it's making editing/touching up my photos a nightmare.
When ever i make an alteration to a photo it seems to take 5-6 seconds to show it on the image. E.g Lets say i paint a vertical black line down a photo. You'll either see the black line slowly following your courser movements OR it'll just freeze up and appear after you release the mouse button. It makes touching up nearly impossible.
I downloaded a Photoshop trial and the changes are instant! I also downloaded gimp and the changes are once again instant. Is this normal for PSP? This 'delay' also happens when cloning, adding effects, air brushing, erasing etc. Thanks for anyhelp you can give this n00b.

Here is a video to show you the problem. The video is only 2-ish mb.

Two questions:
  • What size is the image you are working on as this will have some bearing?
What version of PSPX6? (Help -> About will give the version)
I just tested by creating a 20000 x 20000 pixel image, which is the largest PSPX6 will allow, and painted on it as you did in your video. There was a definite lag in drawing and this does not occur on smaller images.
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

Hi!! Thanks for comment :)

The resolution of the photo in the video is 4320x3240 and that was made using my old camera which is 14.1mp.
However, it happens when i draw on a newly created photo at 1920x1080. :(

My version is 16.0.0.113 x64.

Hope this helps?:(

Random_E-o:

It appears that you are zoomed in on the photo as you draw. The delay may be related to the problem discussed in other postings that parts of what is drawn does not appear. I've experienced this myself and found that changing the zoom level and back again corrects the rendering. This is a bug that hopefully will be fixed in the next version.

See what happens if you zoom out immediately after using the paint brush. Yes, it is a pain.

What size brush are you using? PSP X4 here so it may differ, but when I use a smallish brush (relative to canvas size 5184 ×3456) at about 200 there is no noticable lag, but at 950 there's definitely a lot of lag. I turned off the undo option, just to see if that caused it, but it didn't change anything. So maybe it's doing a lot of perhaps unnecessary arithmetic?

What I did:
Image size 3744 x 5616 pixels.
Brush size in X6 999 pixels = big delay and image was untabbed and scaled at 14 % to show it fully on screen.
I went to X2 and found the same problem.
I went to Photoshop CS2 and with same size brush found no delay.

PSP8 maximum brush size was 500 pixels and no delay.
found some conflicting results with X4 at 500 pixels and X6.

Then looked at some other details and managed to get a big delay in PSP 8 (remember this had no delay)
To get maximum delay use large brush 999 pixels, minimum Hardness 0 and minimum step 1. With these settings going down the full length and back up - roughly 5000 pixels I had a delay that lasted about 1 minute.
And yes the beloved Photoshop will do similar. Change the spacing to 1, the hardness to 0 and even with a 500 pixel brush there was a 7 second delay.

Moral: before you start to criticise and call bug, experiment and know your tools.

Photoshop spacing is set at 25% by default. Yes there are differences in speed of painting, but there is also a massive difference in cost.

Lastly how often are you likely to paint with a 999 pixel brush and a solid color - better to select and flood fill if doing that.
