Proxy Manager loses links to proxy files VS X5

Post by delaluz »

I have VideoStudio X5 PRO & I use the "smart" proxy manager when editing multi cam HD files. Here's what I have noticed:

1) I am able to create proxy files for the 4 HD video files that I am using by right clicking each one of them & selecting "create smart proxy file". When I do this if I click on "settings ... smart proxy manager ... smart proxy queue manager" I see "currently creating name of proxy file".

2) After the file is created if I click on "settings ... smart proxy manager ... smart proxy file manager" I see the names of the proxy files created.

3) After I have created the proxy files I can edit my project without "jerky" playback in the preview window.

THE PROBLEM

If I don't close my VS session I can use the proxy files without any problem. So, I always leave my VS program open. However, sometimes there will be a windows update or other event which causes a re-boot. When this happens & I open my project again VS does not use the proxy files. I checked the location where VS stores the "~Prox_filename.upx" files & all of my proxies are still there. It looks like VS loses the linkage to perfectly good proxy files.

Also, based on past projects, I think I noticed that you can close your VS session, then open VS & the proxy files work. The issue might be that VS loses the proxy file "linkage" if you do a windows restart.

Is there any way to restore this linkage without recreating the proxy files? One would think that it would be very easy for VS to allow you to link to existing proxy files in seconds, rather than waiting an hour or two to create proxy files.

If not, is this problem fixed in version 6 or 7 of VS?

Hi

I do not know of a way to link proxy files, others may know but I don’t think its possible, maybe a question for Corel.

Where are your original files stored :?: if you move or rename the files/folders then you will lose the proxy files links, for later versions I think the actual files are also removed, not a bad thing as they can be quite large. So that deleting files after you have finished your projects also cleans up the proxy folder.

Are your files stored on an external drive?

As a test place some files in a folder on the desktop, create a project using those files, create proxy files. Re-boot the pc, do they retain the proxy files linkage.?

I didn't move or rename the proxy files which are stored in the default directory that VS uses. VS doesn't delete the proxies as far as I can tell.

My proxies are on my C drive & nit an external drive.

Once I finish the project I'm working on I will test if a re-boot destroys the proxy file link.

Anyone know iv V6 or V7 fixes this?

As long as yr VS program (also x6 and7) can "see" yr original video files (location from where you created the proxies), the proxies will be kept linked/stored. This means e.g.
If the originals are on een external medium, it should be active BEFORE VS starts-up, and the files should not be relocated..
Also the external HDD should not be disconnected before VS is closed

My proxy files are on my C drive. I've lost linkage to proxy files that were on the C drive in the VS default location multiple times. Some "event" causes VS to lose links to them. It would be great if VS had a small "fixer" tool that re-established the links.

I have 3 internal sata hard drives:

drive 1 has one partition and is my C drive. The proxies are here

drive 2 has 2 partitions. The second partition is my D drive which has the original files.

drive 3 has 2 partitions.

My computer is set to go to sleep after 1 hour. However, since the proxies are on the C drive (same as OS and same as VS program) it should be spinning when I use VS ... i.e. VS should be able to find them.

It's not about where yr proxies or yr VS program files are stored, but where yr original video files are stored.

My original video files r on an internal drive which as far as I can tell doesn't go to sleep unless the entire computer goes to sleep after one hour of being idle.

Hi delaluz

I don’t know what the cause is or why you should be having the issues when others don’t.

I have been running tests for a while, I have added HD clips to all my drives, I have three drives with the operating system being partitioned.

Proxy files have been created for all files, each time I open VS X5 the proxy files are there. I am sure my drives run down at some times but this does not seem to affect proxy files.
So far I have not had a fail with X5, given that there wont be a problem with X6 and 7.

Being a desktop computer it is not set to go to sleep, so maybe that is the difference?

I would suspect that you will have the same issues using X6 and 7.

Thanks for all the input. I researched this topic several months ago & there were several others that reported that they lost links to their proxy files. Once I get at a break point I will try a couple of tests including:

1. closing VS & then opening again to see if the proxies work (I'm pretty sure this works, but I'm afraid to test it mow).
2. leaving VS open & then do a forced re-boot. This might be the culprit.

No matter what the cause of this problem I think that Corel should develop a "re-link" process since several others have had problems with this. There already is a process for re-linking to your "primary" files in case you re-name or move them to a different directory. I don't think it could be too hard to do this.

Hi

I have to agree that re-linking the proxy files should be possible to do, tell Corel or maybe suggest that in the VideoStudio Wishlist for Version X8 topic
I have only been working with HD for the past year so did not need proxy files when usingX5. I started using proxies with X6 but again not noticed any problems.

Today I set my pc to hibernate, no problems with X5 proxy files on any drive.
