newbie with basic q's

I can open a file, and it shows up in the middle of the workspace screen AND as a raster layer on the right. Then I try to open another file, which I hope would open side-by-side, so I can work from the first image to the second. However, the second opening displaces the first, not alongside it. All I want to do is drag an image onto file #2 from the raster image of File #1. I did it once successfully, but do not know what I did right by accident then. I unticked WINDOW>tab, which allowed it the first time, and it's still unticked, without the same result. Any tips? Thanks you.

So you unticked tabbed documents, that's good. Now either drag the images into position side by side OR click on Window...Tile Vertically. Hope this helps.
