We can get depressed and unhappy with VS with all the problems we read here. I have been a culprit lately about issues I am having. However, I use VS a lot and I am happy with a lot about VS; note that I have Premiere Pro and prefer VS by a wide margin.
I recently took a video clip in Pinnacles National Park. This unspoiled yet fairly accessible park is half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles in California, USA. The clip was on its Bear Gulch trial where there are many "Talus Caves". See Pinnacles is very close to the infamous earthquake St Andreas fault. The many rocky hills in the park move sometimes, and fairly large rocks create caves that sometimes are conveniently on the trial. The one in the clip is about twenty yards (~ the same number of meters). It was very sunny outside, and pretty dark in the middle of the cave. I decided to take the video while walking from outside through the cave and ending on the outside at the other end. In spite of using a fisheye lens on my LUMIX GH3 while doing this, the clip had more shaking than I liked and exposure was not as good as I wanted especially during the dark portions of the cave.
The good results VS gave me were outstanding. I used Mercalli set to Universal Camera with the "less zoom-more steady" meter set at 50%. The second filter that was a surprise to me was the Auto Exposure one; I found it incredibly smart in adjusting exposure automatically as I walked from light to dark to light areas.
That's it. A short post about something to shout about that was satisfyingly good... Al
EDIT: Here's a Yutube video clip showing section of original above and similar section of Mercalli+AutoExposure clip below: http://youtu.be/YmeiwTVrTWU

I agree with you on that!
Forums can often act as a soap box for publicly airing complaints, especially where customer service is poor; but credit is often overlooked and should be given where due - so I can add to what you have said by praising Corel VideoStudio, I started with VSX4 and am now on the latest VSX7 Ultimate, having tried many of the very expensive alternatives (and I mean expensive). For me VS wins hands down, apart from its price, it is intuitive, has a mass of presets which allows me to quick start and concentrate more on getting the job done, rather than having to learn how to build everything from scratch.
I admit that it has Its faults, crashes hang-ups etc, but so do other programs; but the faults are usually not insurmountable and an easy way round can usually be found. What counts for me is that it helps get the job done, handles most file formats thrown at it, and will equally render to many different formats and qualities. The results even amaze me at times, after the computer has been left churning away overnight, successfully rendering some huge multi-gigabyte file. Unfortunately its life then has to be squeezed out of it for uploading to Vimeo or YouTube

Re: GOOD RESULTS ONLY post
Hi Al
Nice days out make for good video, we also like visiting the National Parks / Nature Reserves. Looks like the area is quite photogenic……….
Its not easy holding the camera still when walking through that cave but the stabilisation does a good job, I usually leave the settings as default as I don’t really understand the other options. As for the Exposure type filters they also do a good job Auto Levels is also good, what you use depends on the video content, the program does give plenty of choice.
I don’t have much problems with crashes the program just seems to plod on, Video Editing can be frustrating but so long as you enjoy, that’s all that matters.
I have just upgraded my cameras to HD, so a new experience and learning curve. So far managed to burn my first Bluray although I did create a few Hybrids before purchasing the Bluray Discs.
Thanks for sharing the sample clip, I bet the complete video looks good.

Despite a few issues here and there I have nothing but praise for VS7
I think for the price point its remarkable what it can do, and with the Ultimate version the additional plugins make a huge difference to the funtionality/useability of the overall product.
Before buying VS7 I did the usual rounds of internet research and there really is no perfect product of this type on the market, all seem to have issues/detractors so Im not surprised to read negative comments on VS here from time to time
gold star awarded!!

Re: GOOD RESULTS ONLY post
My first post.
I am 44 and wanted to edit movies of computer gameplay, so I downloaded demos of Corel X7 and Vegas (not pro since it would be outside my budget).
My trial for both was ending soon so I had to choose and just happened to take advantage of the 30% off deal and get UItimate X7 for the same price I would have paid for the regular box. The standard Vegas box is cheaper but is just too mickey-mouse when it comes to using computer-graphics editing where it is slightly harder to hide your rubbish footage behind simplistic fades and titles.
So you can already see it is going well, but why computer games? Well I'm in my second childhood and loving what VS lets me do. 4 weeks in and I am already creating a title template and planning a personal youtube trailer. Pro looking videos are really easy to create in VideoStudio and you don't have to read through tonnes of manuals. I don't have a FMV camera so I'm unlikely to get exited about most of the filters in VS, for real life filming. But I'm pretty sure I'll be asking a number of automation/script/template type questions soon enough. Oh, did I mention, 4 weeks and zarooo crashes
