Hi Dave

First I would have thought you should be able to open a VSP made using VS 11 in X7 without problems, especially if VS11 is still installed, if the program is not installed then some content may not be available when opening in X7 but would invoke a re-link rather than simply crashing.
You may however have issues running the VS 11 program in windows 7
I have just created a project using VS9, images with album transitions, no problems opening the project in X7 and able to create a Mpeg2.

Album transitions have changed for later versions, from X7 there is only the one available but can be customised where earlier versions had many options.

Jpeg Images

Some programs do not like using Progressive type images, generally images from a camera will be saved as Baseline.
You mention using Photo Shop Elements to edit the images.
Did you by any chance save them as Progressive.
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, the Jpeg tab will indicate the encoding mode.

Both programs are installed in their respective locations in %PROGRAMFILES% (Ulead vs. Corel).

I checked both scanned JPEGs and dSLR JPEGS modified using PhotoShop Elements and those that I checked were "Base line".

I had no problem importing the VS 11 Project into VS v17. However v17 modified the Project such that all changes were specific to v17 and v11 no longer could work with that Project file. I expected that so I had made a copy of the work performed in v11 in preparation of using v17. Unfortunately to finish that project I had to re-do those changes, I made when I used v17, when I finished the Project and authored the DVD Movie using v11.
I have just created a project using VS9, images with album transitions, no problems opening the project in X7 and able to create a Mpeg2.
I had hundreds of JPEGs in the Project (~430) with associated transitions and some attributes and the volume may have pushed it over the edge.

I was told that VideoStudio can only go back two versions which means v17 (X7) is compatible with v15 (X5) and above.

I have no problems with v11 [11.0.0157.0] on Win7/32 and I didn't have to set "Compatibility Mode". It installed and functioned flawlessly. ( I had to upgrade from WinXP due to EoL date 4/8/'14 so I built a new PC )

The Flip Album transitions in v11 and v17 are basically the same. There were a few more "variants" in v11 but they were all variants of the same theme. Thus I can see why there is only one theme now in v17 but one can vary its presentation.

BTW: One of things that I love in v17 is the fact that I can "detach" the video preview window and drag it to my second monitor.

I was told that VideoStudio can only go back two versions which means v17 (X7) is compatible with v15 (X5) and above.
Video Studio has *always* been forward compatible (i.e. a later version can always open a project file from an earlier version), but it is only backwards compatible in the sense that it can only save a project in a format recognisable by earlier versions up to two versions back. This is not a new feature of X7. It also applies to VS11, which can open vsp from all earlier versions, but you can only save a project in VS 11 in VS 10 and 9 formats. Moreover, if you don't specifically save a project in one of the two earlier formats, it always saves in the current version format, and will not be able to be opened in any earlier version.

So if someone actually told you you could save a VS 11 project in X7, and later reopen it in VS 11, they were wrong on a couple of levels.

No statement to that effect was ever made. I'm sorry if I gave that impression.

BTW: v10 can only save to native v10 and backwards to v9 format.

UPDATE:

Corel indicates, definitively, the Crash events were indeed caused by starting the Project in v11 and attempting to finish it in v17 (X7).

Again... Thank you all.

Hi Dave

The only program I do not have is VS11 so I cannot replicate any projects.
Thank you for the update, at least you will be able to re-do the project from scratch using X7.

enjoy

The Project in question was completed with V11. The DVD's and their cases will be mailed on Saturday, 6/14. I used SureThing for printing the DVD Faces and the DVD cases.

I am starting a new Project and it will all be done done using X7.

It will have both Video and JPEG content. Some of it will entail conversion of VHS stored home movies. My Dell Latitude D630 notebook will be used for that. I have a full Dell Docking station and in the PCI slot is an ATI Wonder VE card. I intend to grab NTSC video and Audio from the connected VCR.

I look forward to using the advanced video processing capabilities in X7. I have already found it easily rotates an AVI video 90 degrees ( the way it was captured from a Point-and-Shoot camera with video capabilities ).
