Screen Capture set to "custom" area results in red crosshair

Post by johnkorb »

I'm using the boxed version of VideoStudio Ultimate X6 with the recent patch and while screen capture works fine if I select "primary monitor" or "secondary monitor", if I select "custom" then there will be a red crosshair across the selected screen area during capture and that red crosshair will be parted of the recorded video.

This ONLY happens when a "custom" capture area is used. I don't get the red crosshair when selecting a full monitor. This behavior is new since installing the update.

Suggestions?

Thanks! I tried disabling non-Microsoft services (as suggested in the article) and that didn't go so well. Lots of hardware not responding modals followed by a memory management BSOD. After a second reboot it stayed up long enough to get into VS, but the capture wouldn't work at all. Thus, back to the system restore point I made before disabling the services.

I still have VS Ultimate X5 installed, so I tried running it. Same red crosshair, but on ALL capture attempts, not just the "custom area" captures.

I'll try looking for possible software conflicts outside the business day.

What version of Catalyst Control Centre are you running, version 14.4 corrected the issue for me (no longer need to have them disabled)
Have you tried just disabling Catalyst Control Centre and Hydrovision in msconfig.exe startup

Regarding "what update?", a couple of months ago VS X6 said there was an update available, so I installed the update.

Regarding the version of Catalyst Control Center:
My Catalyst Control Center is 13.1. I've tried a few times over the last couple of hours to run the latest "AMD Driver Downloader" but each time I receive "The best driver for this device is 14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql.exe" and click on the "Download Now" button I get an "AMD Driver AutoDetect" modal with the message "Could not connect to server: Could not parse error".

I've found the Catalyst package on the AMD site and have downloaded it. I have a project rendering and it won't be done for a hour or more, so as it is now almost 3 AM I'm going to call it a night and install the Catalyst Control Center 14.4 and driver in the morning, time permitting.

Everyone - thanks for your help!

Well, installing the latest Catalyst Control Center didn't solve the problem - I'm still getting the red crosshair with custom captures. In addition, it broke the Blu-ray player software, FLASH no longer works in any browser (and reinstalling FLASH did not solve the problem) and dxdiag now reports that HDCP is DISABLED. Looks like going back to the restore point may be an activity tonight. I'm going to be in meetings all day but I'll be checking back tonight.

Again, thanks for all the help and suggestions!

I've spent many hours this weekend trying many different things and so far the red crosshair just won't go away. I've made sure every possible driver is up-to-date, all software is up-to-date, and it appears the red crosshair isn't affected by any of those things.

So, since I have a separately licensed copy of VS on my Windows 8.1 laptop I decided to try to do some screen capture videos on it. The laptop doesn't have anywhere near as much software on it as my desktop does, so I figured there would be fewer possible software conflicts. Plus, the VS X6 on it is a much newer install.

Just as with the desktop, all is fine as long as the capture is of the entire screen or an individual window, but any custom capture results in the red crosshair.

Anyone have any additional suggestions?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Don't really know what else to suggest, But when I had the cross hairs, I also noted, at the same time, that "Customize Motion" did not work, but by disabling the graphics card in Startup fixed both issues. Is Customize Motion fully functional on both your desktop and laptop.

You could try downloading the trial version of VSX7 (it can be installed without affecting VSX6) and see if the issue persists, if it does then that would indicate that there is some form of conflict with another installed program.

I didn't see the "Customize Motion" setting - where do I find it?

I downloaded the trial of VS X7 and like X6 it works find for any capture other than "custom".

Sorry for the delay in responding - my internet connection has been down a good part of the day. It seems when the temperature and humidity rises, the connection fails.

Thanks!

Hi John,

Right click on an image/video in the timeline and select Customize Motion, see if you can change the border color or rotate. If like me, you have the cross hairs with screen capture and Customize Motion not working correctly, then I would suspect that you have a graphics card issue. Have you tried just disabling Catalyst Control Centre and Hydrovision in msconfig.exe startup.
