ASP2 hangs for a certain directory with 700 raw photos

Post by rainer042 »

Hi,

I am using ASp2 i586 on openSuSE13.1 with KDE 4.11. Generally ASP2 works fine.
However I discovered a strange bug when I work on photos in one directory (I am not using catalogs) that contains about 700 photos, raw files from my Nikon D80. Since I processed those photos years ago using bibble4 there are also dsc_xxxx.nef.bib files.

When changing to this directory ASP2 first scans the files and creates previews. Then I do my work on one or more photos using ASP2, all works fine. Then I quit ASP2.

When I now start ASP2 again the window appears but is unusable, no reactions to any mouse clicks, I cannot even move the whole window itself, no reaction it won't move. The only way to get out of this is to kill the process, start again and then when told that ASP2 had problems during the last run press "Cancel". Then ASP2 starts fine, I can change to the same folder again, and all 700 previews are generated one more time (allthough they should be in the cache already). And if I quit now and start again the whole story repeats itself.

Any ideas about his, any debug output I can provide that could help in finding this bug?

Thanks
Rainer

.... forgot to mention:

The described effect does not happen with other directories at least I only saw it when using this "big" directory containing many photos.

I think I found the problem that caused the hang of ASP2.

It was not the number of photos in the directory, but some old .xmp files created by bibble5 some years ago. It seems these files led to the strange hang effect I experienced.

After I deleted the old xmp files ASP2 works as expected. So if anyone has similar problems its worth to look for old .xmp files created by bibble5 and delete them.

Have a nice day

You don't have one of them still available for testing?
Would be interesting.

My backup still had them all ...

I tried to narrow down which of the 10 xmp's actually has caused the trouble. I found one, possibly there are still others, however I stopped trying after I found the first. The file structure seems to be ok, so probably one of the contained settings causes the trouble. The file is attached.

I've renamed a D700 NEF accordingly and then went to the folder. The image shows up just fine with the adjustments.
The plugins referenced in the XMP are all installed.
So something else is different.

Did you start ASP2, then quit and then start again. Only then I see the hang effect.

When I first change into the directory containing this photo and xmp everything is fine. However if I quit then, start ASP2 again then I will not see the photo and have to kill AfterShotPro2.

Interesting.
No, I only made up the files and visited the folder.
Now that I go at it again with a freshly started AS2, I get the hang. Good. that is reproducible with a defined test set.

Just tried again. Its really important to also select the photo and then quit and restart. It seems not to be sufficient to just start ASP2 and change to the folder. You will see the small preview but if you quit without selecting the small preview to see the photo larger in the main window, nothing will happen if you quit and then start again.

Ok, as only one image was in my folder I did select it to see if the adjustments take...
