License and upgrade questions

Post by phenyl »

Hi,

I am a user of ASP 1.xxx, nearly ready to update ASP2 but I have a few questions left :

-License - How long is the license valid and for how long will I be getting updates? Until V3 comes out? for one year? Whatever happens faster?

-What is this 'download insurance for two years' (and 8 dollars) good for? The terms are explained in one paragraph, but they leave quite a lot to the imagination. (So far I was used to just download the trial and re-enter the serial number after buying a new hard drive...) It somehow seems a little strange and feels like a cash grab.

Thanks for any clarifications.

Based on the behavior I've seen with Corel Paintshop Pro:

The license is currently perpetual. You get it as long as you like and you don't break any of Corel's rules explained in the EULA.

Updates, typically, happen when they feel like issuing one. Could be a lot, could be a few. Usually they won't issue an update for a version that's not currently being sold. i.e. you probably won't see any more updates for Version 1, but you can still download the updates to date.

Download insurance lets you redownload the installer file even after the newest version comes out. i.e. if you had insurance for version 1 you could still download it, provided the time limit hadn't lapsed. Most people just burn the installer file to a CD or save to the cloud I would assume. It's a bit of a cash grab, but then I feel that way about auto insurance, health insurance, etc... paying for something that in most cases never gets used.
