ASP vs DCRaw

Post by newsposter »

Greg, can you say if the ASP code team is at least looking at the capabilities of DCRaw in comparison to their work on ASP?

Even with the GPL2+ license terms of DCRaw, it's still useful as a guide for what capabilities and standards that ASP should be looking to be better than.

Right now, ASP isn't even meeting the standard of this free, publicly supported raw processing library. This translates into open-source software like darktable, litezone, raw therapee, etc. There is even an PS plugin that sets up DCRaw for use in PS and Lightroom.

I just love those blanket statements.
Sorry, but the way you word this is nonsense.
Yes, dcraw has excellent Xtrans support which is missing in AS and on some cameras it will give better results than AS. But on others, it gains nothing compared to AS.
Looking at dcraw to see how one can get decent base results for Xtrans is definitely worthwhile.
But most of the differentiating factors between the converters are not at that level but the next step up.

cheers

So your issue is with the way I wrote, not with the substance? Thanks

I agree with the OP. Take for example the nuts and bolts, at least for me, like highlight and shadow recovery. I find ASP to be really lagging behind DCraw in this regard.
