UVS X7 Pro with GoPro quality problems with Mercalli

Post by JamesRoyal »

I am using the new Mercalli anti-shake filter with some GoPro Hero 3 footage and when I run the Mercalli filter on the clip it seriously degrades the HD quality. What am I doing wrong? How can I fix it? The raw footage is clean and crisp, but once Mercalli is done with it it looks like garbage. What am I missing? If you need more detail let me know and I can provide it.

Apparently I am not the only one with this problem.

If I remember correctly, when you apply Mercalli, it comes up with some strange message which is as clear as mud. (IIRC it overprints the message on the VS preview screen saying the video must be analysed again. In other words, you click on the Customize Filter button and run the analysis, which may take a little time. In practice, when the Mercalli control box appears, I click 'Further Settings' and usually select 'Rock Steady Camera' as one of the settings, though depending on your footage, you might need to select another e.g. glide camera... though the default Universal Camera will also cover most bases. But the basic message is that you need to experiment a bit with the various possible settings in that Mercalli box until you come up with a combination which works with your video.)

But in essence I have found it best to convert your footage to progressive if it is originally interlaced. (This will appear as Frame Based in Video Studio.) If you accept that in choosing your output settings, then the resulting video should be both stabilised by Mercalli and retain its original high quality... I have used Mercalli many times with my own Hero 3 Black output, and on one whole 25 minute HDV project (it was very cold so my hand shook more than normal!!), with excellent results.
