I have recently purchased a DVD recorder for the television and so have DVD-VR data on discs. All I am trying to do is edit out adverts etc on Videostudio but I cannot get any sound.
I am able to insert DVD-VR from the menu and the picture is fine. The sound line shows in the audio view, but there is no sound forthcoming.
If your DVD recorder uses Dolby AC-3 audio format, and you are using an earlier version of Video Studio than the current one (VS9), that may be your problem. VS8 will only handle AC-3 with a US$30 plug-in. Earlier versions will not handle it at all. VS9 comes with AC-e support included.
In a word, yes. I understand you may still be able to buy the plug-in for version 8, though it costs US$29.95. For $49.95, though, you can upgrade to version 9 which comes with the AC-3 module included, plus lots of other bells and whistles. To my mind, it would make more sense to spend the extra $20 and get the full upgrade.
There is a free filter which you can use in VS8 to at least import a clip which has AC-3 audio on it. But it is one-way only: in other words, it will allow you to import such a clip, but it will not itself convert a clip's audio to Dolby AC-3 for burning to disc. You will thus be limited to producing audio in LPCM or MPEG formats. Unfortunately, I no longer have the URL for that filter, though someone else may.
If your importing files recorded on a dvd desktop recorder you would
want to use VideoStudio 9.
If you notice trying to import using VideoStudio 8 you end up with all the
chapters as separate mpeg2 files. They are a hassle to work with because
you end up with many of them.
VideoStudio 9 allows you to import the complete mpeg2 file (video) OR
the chapters, so you have the 2 options.
These features along with the Dolby Audio were added to VideoStudio 9 and
MovieFactory 4 for better compatibility with desktop dvd recorders and
dvd camcorders.
MovieFactory 4 Standard also has Dolby Audio included with the program
just like VS9.
I have found version 9 to be better than version 8.
My opinion of course.
