VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
I have just put together a new motherboard for my PC. I'm running Windows 8.1 64bit, an i7 4770K 3.5 Ghz processor on a new MSI gaming MB with the 1150 socket. I'm using 16Gb of 1600 DDR3 ram from Gskill. An MSI Radeon x270 videocard with 2Gb of DDR5 ram. My processor can overclock to 3.9Ghz, but my system is indicating it is overclocking at 4.2Ghz.
Anyway, previously this program worked on an older system only running Windows 7 64bit Profession, with a 2.2Ghz core duo and 4 Gb of ram on a laptop... except that it would quite often overheat and cause the computer to shut down. Now, it runs well, accept it crashes during rendering. The crash doesn't always occur in the same spot. It seems to happen at random... Has anyone experienced crashing during rendering on a brand new system? Is it possible that overclocking is causing the system to become unstable and the program can't handle it?
I'm really new to this, so I just need a place to start looking... I'm trying out a possible solution already by turning off the overclocking function, but if that doesn't work, I'd like to ask the experienced people where to look next.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
I would be certainly looking at the overclocking. If you look at my own computer specifications under my avatar photo, you will see that my own editing machine is far weaker than your own. However, I have never -- not once -- had any crashes at all, and specifically in this case, with Video Studio X5, X6 and now X7. My projects, moreover, often involve quite demanding AVCHD 2.0 video at the highest bitrates (28 Mbps).
One other thing we would need to check, though, is the nature of the projects you are editing. What format video is involved in them? Is it using standard or custom frame sizes? Are there any complicated transitions or filters involved? How many of the editing tracks (main and overlay) are involved? These sort of factors might cause some people problems, though again with a machine like yours, it should be able to handle them with ease. So again I suspect that the overclocking is an important factor in your crashes.
I note also that you say that with your old Win 7 2.2 GHz computer that it used to overheat with resulting computer shut-down. Coincidentally, I still have a similar computer with the same specifications, and it too has never shut down with VS. Mind you, it was very slow with AVCHD projects but it nevertheless did the job. Did you by any chance overclock that one too?

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Ken, you were correct. When I turned off the full overclocking capabilities in the BIOS, I haven't had an issue with crashing.
I'm just running a 17 minute test video recorded with my GoPro Hero 3 Black in 1080p, still in MP4 format.
Now, I just need to figure out how to get the program to utilize more processing power. It's running at 3.85Ghz, but it shows it's only using 15% of the processing power. I suppose I should post that in another thread.

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
I have found that the amount of GPU usage depends on the complexity of your project, if I render a straight forward simple video, ie: not many tracks used and simple transitions etc. then only 15-20% of GPU is used with an average of 4 cores being utilized. However, with projects comprising multiple tracks, complex transitions, complex text plus music, then the average GPU usage increases to 40% with occasional bursts to 80-90% with all 8 cores utilized. The amount of ram used during render seem to remain in the region of 3.5-3.8 GB, even though I have 16GB available.algermilitia wrote:

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Thanks for the reply, Robert. Well, to let you know a little bit of what I was experimenting with, I had a 17 minute video. It was recorded on a GoPro at 1080p. I left it in Mpeg4 format, and added 3 FX filters to it. I added a Tune FX, Soft Focus FX, and a Smoothing filter. It took nearly 24 hours to render. I'm certain that's not right.... How do you guys have things set up to get faster rendering speeds?

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Hi
If you render the new file using the same properties as the original then render times should be acceptable, changing the render properties will cause longer renders.
Share – Same as First Video Clip, I assume the option is available for your video file types, and that the first video is your GoPro file.
View the details in the Properties panel.
Enable Smart Render should fully render the changes and do a quicker job on unedited sections, however if you have applied filters to all Smart Render may not be that effective.
It could simply be the combination of the three filters, if they are applied to the whole project then yes I would expect longer renders
But a 17 minute taking 24 hours is quite ridiculous.

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Hi Trevor. Thanks for the info. I agree that 24 hour render times is ridiculous. It would take 3 days on my older computer with just a 2.2 core duo processor and graphics chipset. I will try to talk with Corel's support staff on Facebook to see what I can find out.
Thanks again
Thanks again

What happens if you do not use any filters?

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
I'm also wondering if the filters are applied to all the project, or just parts, and whether all the filters are applied to the same individual clips? I'm wondering what might happen if, for instance, you are applying them to individual clips, how long it might take to render each individual clip by itself, with the filters applied (Save Trimmed Video). Then when they are all finished, whether you could string them back together again as a project and render anew -- though this times it should be quick as SmartRender should apply...?

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Hi guys. If I don't use ANY filters, I can pretty much render in real time. But, why do the filters take so much time to be applied I do not know. Rendering, only using a single filter such as a soft focus, doesn't take quite so long to render. Maybe about double the time the video actually is. I'm testing that right now. I suppose half of my problem is that I cannot use hardware encoding acceleration... My videocard drivers just don't seem to support it with Videostudio x6.
Yes, I can render in several passes. Adding different effects each time, and that wouldn't take up near the time. But, I figure if I can apply all settings at once during one rendering session, it should work ok. Do you guys just use the FX filters in small snippets of the video track, or do you run certain ones throughout the entire track at times? There are some things I would like to have throughout the entire track at times, like de-noise. I guess I was hoping for too much. lol That I should have better performance with a system running about the recommended specs. I guess I should just play with it more and see how it plays out.
Thanks again!
Brian

Re: VS X6 Continuously Crashes During Render
Successful driver update gave me the option of turning on hardware encoder acceleration options. Now, I am rendering the same test files with all the filters applied as before at near real time speeds. I am a lot happier about this now! Performance indicators are showing between 85% and 100% of the CPU usage.

Hi
Thanks for the feedback, good news that you are rendering in real time
I think its about time I thought about a computer upgrade???

hi algermilitia
Could you tell me what driver you had updated ?? I have the same problem but crash . It cost more time to be rendering .algermilitia wrote:Successful driver update gave me the option of turning on hardware encoder acceleration options.
