DVD burning question
The difficulty I have is wavy lines in building, boats, etc., seen in a DVD I burned using Corel Video Studio 6 on my DVD player..on the computer, it looks fine. I shot MP4 at 35mpbs on my Canon 400HF and I burned two DVDs of the same project..one from the project in the timeline, and the other, a 'new' project imported from the library. The result was the same...doesn't matter if I was panning or not as any movement from the subject resulted in wavy vertical/horizontal lines. Wondering if I should have shot with a different setting or burned with a different setting, or both. Thanks

Re: DVD burning question
Welcome pauli. I hope you can get a good result.
Sorry I could not help.
Could you try at one of the standard settings on your camera to see if that helps.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: DVD burning question
Hi Paul
Can you give more details of your original video files.
With the clip in the timeline: right click and select properties. Post the details.
You can if you wish create an image of the window to attach to your post.
The wavy lines or are they jagged edges may be caused by the interlacing being different from original to the new rendered files.
The default DVD Mpeg2 template will use Upper Field, if your originals are using Frame Based (aka progressive) then you may have issues, and why we ask for those property details.
You may be best to create your own template using Settings - Make Movie Templates Manager to create a DVD Mpeg2 using Frame Based.
Just to note, your camera as far as I know records to 1920 x 1080 full HD, and maybe set to 60P, converting to DVD Mpeg2 will use 720 x 480 x 29fps, that’s quite a reduction in size resulting in a reduction in quality.
We assume you are indeed burning a Standard DVD not Bluray?
To burn a disc you are best to convert / render the project to a single video file using Share Create Video File, using your new template… you can play the file to check quality, then use the file to burn your disc.

V news anchor is wear a very 'busy' tie. The detains do not remain distinct when he moves.
The info you requested: File Format, MPEG4; Video Type, H.264 High Profile Video; Attributes, 24 bits, 1920x1080; Frame Rate, 60.004 fps; Data Rate, 34952.
The options I have when shooting are: MP4 or AVCHD and 35, 24, 17 or 4 mbps. The project in question was shot in MP4 at 35 mbps.
I just noticed looking at Corel VS 6, which I used to edit and burn the project to DVD, has an option to "enable 60p/50p" which I did not select. Should I have?
If my Canon HF400 only shoots in 1920x1080 (is that MP4?) and Corel VS 6X only converts to 720x480..is that my problem? I am burning to standard DVD and not BluRay.
Many thanks.

Re: DVD burning question
Hi
I think I understand the effect you are seeing, a shimmer if vertical lines rather than jagged edges.
I had a similar issue, I will see if I can find the relative post.
MP4 is the type of compression used to record the video, it’s a form of AVCHD.
Some cameras will record using MTS (transport stream)
The enable 60p / 50P editing sets the timeline to use 60 fps, the default being 29.97fps
That will allow all frames to be displayed within the timeline. So yes when working with 60P you should set that. However you are intending to burn a standard DVD.
A DVD Disc has to use Mpeg2 at 25fps with a frame size of 720 x 480, a data rate of 8000kbps for a 60 minute video will create a file at 4 Gb ish and fit to a standard disc (4.3 Gb)
Your final render to Mpeg2 should use these properties:-
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First (you may use Frame Based)
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: 8000 kbps (up to 60 minute movie)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Re: DVD burning question
Thank you very much. I'll try what you've suggested to improve the project we've been discussing. Seems I'm at a disadvantage by not being able to adjust my shooting from 1920x1080 down to 720x480.
In the future, keeping in mind; my Canon HF400 limits my shooting choices to AVCHD and MP4 mbps of 35, 24, 17 or 4, I'll be using Corel Video Studio 6, and I'll be burning to a standard dvd, do you suggest I set my camera to MP4 and change my mbps to 24 from 35 and follow the rendering of future projects as you described in your previous post?

Re: DVD burning question
Hi
Sorry you may have misunderstood, I realise that your camera uses 1920 x 1080 as does most HD cameras, but the frame rate of 60 is not compatible for burning a disc and has to be converted to 29.97 fps. I was suggesting you record using 29.97fps.
Whatever you choose to record to has to be downscaled to standard definition which will reduce the quality.
You can of course burn a Hybrid disc, this uses AVCHD files to burn to standard DVD discs, you use the same burner, but require a Bluray Player connected to the tv to play the discs, Limited to approx 30 minutes per disc.
For my last shoot I used 50P recording rather than 25fps simply as a test to see if converting to SD would improve quality, still editing the project. However your comments don’t show any improvements.
Certainly converting to SD was not as good as I would have expected.
The link has 3 test video, I think showing the problem you are having, the converted using X7 has the problems.

I think Video Studio could do a better job of converting HD to SD, you may be best to use another program, I used AVS 8 converter which seemed to do a better job.
I can upload a sample later, a little busy at the moment.

Re: DVD burning question
HI...me again:
I'm still confused..maybe less so but...my Canon HF400, recording in MP4, does not give me the option of reducing the fps...It's set at 60. The only choice I have once I've selected MP4, is the mbps: either 35, 24, 17, or 4. I realize that selecting a lower mbps will give me a longer recording time and less quality but would it also reduce the shimmering issue I described?
Thank you.

According to Canon, these are the fps specs for your camcorder:pauli55500 wrote:HI...me again:

Re: DVD burning question
I dug a little deeper....while my Canon doesn't let me directly select fps, apparently if I select 24 mpbs, that is equiv. to setting the camera at 30 fps. I didn't know that before...thanks!
