Best computer to run VSpro X7

Post by phnxrsngbr »

I am getting a new computer built and wondering what would be the best setup to run VS without crashing, with a system that runs reliably? My current system (you can probably see the specs on the side here) has gone bad and I need to replace. I quite often can use ALL video tracks plus music tracks as I have multiple layers in my videos, slowing my system down dramatically. I'm having a hard time finding system components that will 1. play well together 2. Be reliable when using and not using VS.

Outside of VS I can often end up opening 5 different programs and run them together so need something that really is high functioning.
With the system I now have, by the time I'm done working with a video in VS it's running like a turtle, or crashing. Actually, the entire system crashes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, for best:
motherboard
CPU
Graphics card (looking at GTX 780 but can use less if possible)
Total system ram that's best (I currently have 8GB)
anything else pertinent

Thanks VERY much for your help!

Your current system should have no problems with VS X7. If you are having crashes, etc then there is something in your system that is causing that. Before you waste money on a system that might be only marginally better, I would do some system maintenance and cleanup.

What is the make/model of your computer system? Having an over complicated project can slow down any system.

Hi Canuck,

Thanks for your reply :)

My system has its own problems, beyond working with VS. As it is now 4 years old, regardless of using VS or not I am getting a new one. It's been in the shop several times now as it's never worked well, including with VS, as I noted.

So I'm trying to configure the new machine to take VS videos into account while getting a system that will be reliable (I don't mess around with a system internals after I purchase it) for everything, plus work very well with VS. What I'm trying to do at the forum is get suggestions on what heavy VS users have had good results with, as far as configuration.

This is what I'm currently looking at getting:
1. Asus Sabertooth motherboard
2. Intel i-7 4820 or comparable.
3. Nvidia 780 or 770 2 GB GDDR5 (but am contemplating 760 w 2 GB)
4. 16 GB ram
5. 480 GB SSD for C drive, 1 TB 10,000 RPM for D drive--which is my video drive and data storage drive.
6. DVD RW and Blu Ray RW optical drives
7. Windows 7 pro.

That should be more than ample to run VS, but it also needs to run well together--all components--and be dependable for the long haul. Longer than 4 years.

Oh, there is no make/model for my current computer--we have a small computer company make our office and personal computers for us, remaining local. Also, I do make complicated videos in VS--often using every track because I'm overlaying a lot of stuff, using a lot of special effects, transitions, backgrounds, blue screen videos overlaid on top of other ones, etc.

Your current machine should be running circles around mine and I have no issues running X7. My vids are only 8-10 minutes long on average. I was having some crash issues when editing audio but that may have been a project settings problem. I've been building machines since the early 90's and the most important component for stability is the power supply. And while people seem to love Asus motherboards, I've never had luck with them, always unstable. Wish I could give some specific recommendations but I haven't followed this stuff since building this machine.
