Noise and Distorted Audio During Capture

Post by jchunter »

Problem: As soon as VS9 recognizes my Panasonic GS400 camcorder firewire connection in Capture mode, there is a loud “motor-boat” noise from the PC speakers. This noise continues until I press the Capture Video button or press the TAPE STOP button on the Capture screen. During capture, the PC audio is intermittently, seriously distorted with a similar “motor-boat” noise. However, the resulting capture files have perfect sound and no noise.

My capture properties are:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

I have tried the following to correct the condition with NO success:
1) Cleaned the camcorder tape heads.
2) Tried another tape
3) Changed the audio capture properties to Mpeg and LPCM
4) Changed the video capture property to AVI
5) Adjusted the speaker volume level on the camcorder (possible feedback)
6) Checked the audio volume settings on the camcorder (Auto)
7) Repositioned the tape past the end of the leader.

This problem smells like an electrical / hardware problem because of the intermittence but it can’t be because the captured files are perfect. My current theory centers on bugs in the VS camcorder control code and/or bugs in the sound previewing software, which, like the video preview, includes the least functionality possible, to lighten the computing load during capture.

If anyone can suggest other possibilities, I will be happy to check them out.

BTW, Torsten, have you noticed this problem on your GS400?

Yes, I have the same issue when I capture from my GS400. I think it's the result of the Audio Preview code sitting on a section of tape where the DV streams starts or stops.

ArcAngel,
Can we count on you to forward this problem to the Video Studio developers in Taiwan?
