AfterShot v2 Hints and Caveats

Post by afx »

Key items to have in mind for AS2:

Plugins:
In the 32bit version the old plugins from v1 should still work, the API has not really changed.
In the 64bit version, you will need plugins compiled for 64bit (the 32bit plugins can be installed, they just do not work).

In the past, when a plugin was missing, but the XMP had settings for it,
changing the settings resulted in nuking the settings for the plugin.
AS2 will not remove settings for plugins in the XMP if it does not have the plugin installed.

Noise reduction:
NoiseNinja is gone (due to Picturecode not renewing the contract with Corel,
guess they want to push PictureNinja ;-)
It is really completely gone.
The new Athentech Noise reduction seems quite capable, but with less control.

In contrast to the plugin settings though, NN settings will be removed when changing
the settings of a file with AS2.

64bit vs. 32bit:
You really do not need to use the 64bit version. AS2 does not gain anything significant in my experience.
On 64 bit Linux systems you should be able to install the 32 bit version after installing
some prerequisites without problems (works on my 64bit Ubuntu 14.04 systems).
Plugin users should at least wait until the plugins they use are available in 64bit before installing the 64bit version.

Prerequisites
Prerequisites can be a bit of a pain. On Ubuntu, the software center seems to be able to take care of them (most other tools can either install from a file or resolve dependencies but not both).

OpenCL:
OpenCL can lead to strange renderings. In AS1 and AS2 alike.
But, at least on my systems, the standard setting worked in
AS1 without much problems.
In AS2 I have to set OpenCL to a lower setting to avoid those strange artifacts.

Parallel install:
You can install AS1 and AS2 in parallel. You just can not run it in parallel.
Make sure you use different user home directories. Copy your old batch settings etc to the new one.
You can also install AS2 32bit and 64 bit in parallel.
(Well, RPM based parallel installs do not work, but fiddling wit the RPM spec file can make it work for the curious)

cheers

Thanks for the summary. I think it has nothing in for me.

It is a shame that Corel dropped the ball in fixing the white balance in 1.2.0.7. Now they want $60 to fix a bug.

As for camera support, take it with a grain of salt. When they added NEX-3N support 1.2.0.7, the brightness and color are off. And it is still not fixed in ASP 2.0. I bet they just take a camera and created a profile and they messed up.

On my 12.04 I had to type

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libglapi-mesa:i386
then it installed correctly.

Thanks for the tips. I had installed the 64 bits version and removed it straight away after I read your post.
Just one thing : I usually use deb packets. Need to install gdebi, but seems more comfortable to me.

Thanks again,

J.-L.

Thanks -- it's heartening to see an upgrade, and your tip to go 32bit is very helpful.

If you have custom crops then make a note of them because they get lost in the upgrade.

Could somebody help here please.

I read in this thread that you could run AfterShot 1 and 2 in parallel on the same system. I want to do this to evaluate AfterShot 2 before considering an upgrade. I downloaded and installed the Try-Before-You-Buy of version 2, and now I have lost access to AfterShot Pro 1. I only a menu entry to version 2. I did use seperate directories when I started version 2 for first time, but how do I run version 1 now? Uninstall version 2 and reinstall version 1?

Thanks

George

that's weird and should not be, but..

..from the back of my head: you are using an RPM-based distro.
and Corel is messing up the RPMs really good.
since my distro uses DEB i do not know if there is a workaround this issue.

Thanks for your reply.

I restored access to Aftershot 1 by uninstalling version 2 and re-installing version 1.

I will see if I can find anything in the RPM that might help.
