I'm following the instructions for creating 3D TEXT in Paintshop, using the magic wand. I'm able to add the drop shadow, but the color of my original text completely disappears and only the drop shadow shows up. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? These are the steps I'm following, according to the Users Guide. Thanks!
1. Apply raster text to a transparent layer on an image.
2. On the Tool Options palette, choose the Magic Wand tool .
3. Select the text.
4. Choose the Effects menu, and select an effect.

I've updated your instructions. Hopefully this will work for you.
1. Apply raster text to a transparent layer on an image. You do this by setting the "Create As" option on the Tool Option Palette to "Floating" I think you might have been using "Selection"
2. On the Tool Options palette, choose the Magic Wand tool .
3. Select the text.
4. Choose the Effects menu, and select an effect.

Re: 3D Text in PSP X6 - Original Text Disappears
In my case when I place text as Floating I do not need to use the magic wand to select the text. As soon as I click the Apply the text is floating and selected. So steps 2 and 3 are superfluous.
It also works with
1. Type text as Vector.
Optional Right click the vector text layer and Convert to Raster layer.
2. Effects > 3D effexts > Drop Shadow and you get a warning message that it has to convert the text to a raster layer.
No need for any magic wand or selection process as that text is on a transparent layer.
Another cool effect which also works is after they have been converted to a raster layer, duplicate that layer and then use the Move tool on the top text and then the arrow keys to offset the top text layer to also create a 3d effect. You can also put a slim drop shadow to further enhance the 3D effect.
Also duplicate the top layer and move a couple of pixels and repeat that a number of times .

The top image is a vector text apply convert to raster and drop shadow, while the lower is 6 duplicates and each moved a couple of pixels up and to left in turn.
